"Thank you" for your support; "Thank you" for your encouragement, and, most importantly, "Thankvou" for your friendship. It is at this time that I inform you of my resignation (effective April 15,1994) as a Police Officer with the Dept. of Public Safety here at WCU. The job of a police officer is of ten a difficult task. We are commissioned to be of service, to enforce the laws and policies and, ultimately, to provide a safe campus community. These responsibilities can sometimes be over- Marriott brings change, still needs improvements Dear Editor, Kudos to Marriott for bringing WCU's food services out of the 19th century and into modernity. I've given Marriott a few months to establish itself and get organized. Now ifs time for some tactful suggestions. First, little things mean a lot. Biscuits and rolls hard enough to cut grass really rain on an eater's parade. Some of the fruit near the end on the line often looks so embarrassing I cringe at ever touching it. Is it me or is white rice - dry white rice at that - served every single day? Bland potatoes are not a satisfactory substitute. Serving sizes are not big enough. I think I speak for all of us when I complain about the chicken salad being spread on my sandwich like peanut butter. Be a little generous please! Second, don't overextend yourself. What's up with pseudo- creative entrees like Chicken Coperhager? What's next? Norwegian noodles and Bolivian bratwurst? It's better to be excellent and defined than mediocre and overextended. Speaking of mediocre, we have a real starch conspiracy. Do not serve mashed potatoes and rice with spaghetti! Third, serve us hot food. The North Carolina Health Code certainly would not condone food being served at 90"F after sitting around two hours. Use covers to seal in the heat. Also, stacking food in the trays eight inches high prevents any semblance of effective heating. Your 84% sanitation grade is a little low. Any connection? Okay, okay, now for the good. Your potato bar is excellent. It's usually well-stocked and appealing. Your salad section is very good as well. Generally, your employees are competent and friendly. Your ever-so-of ten all -you-can-eat buffet is outstanding. Your TV/ Music setup is a good idea but needs some hard-core fine-tuning. The tables are clean. The lines are better than they used to be. Marriott, you have improved the quality of food at WCU, but moremustbedone. Thesesugges- tions are not expensive and were written to be constructive criticisms. For this semester I give you aC-. Manyofyouhavemademyjob worthwhile. Your support, your patience, your understanding, your smiles, your willingness to admit to your offenses and your desire to see to it that others uphold the laws are admirable. I salute you in making the WCU community a welcoming and safe environment I plan to remain in Sylva for a few months (the summer months). If I can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to contact me. I wish the best to you for the remainder of this semester. Sincerely, Officer Danny Allen Underground editor surfaces, requests private communication Dear Editor Moses, Please see that Lori Needham, Barbara Coan and Susan Lona get my name and address. I would like very much to discuss the freedom of speech and issues on censorship with them. However, I am an underground editor for a reason. I enjoy it. Simple as that. What I print is on my nickel. I can not very well reveal my identity, or I won't be very underground now will I? These ladies do deserve to know who they are addressing. So if you wouldn't mind, please hold my name and address for Lori, Barbara and Susan. (I use their first names because I feel that we are so close now.) Please print this so that these ladies can respond to me personally. I think that together we have taken enough of the Carolinian's space. I ask that you please withhold my name from print, but please give it to the ladies mentioned above if they inquire. Thank you, Underground editor WSJ slights Cullowhee once again Anderson declares war Dear Editor, After erroneously placing WCU in the Appalachian foothills in the controversial "Class Struggle" article — the story that just won't go away — The Wall Street Journal has finally gone too far. In a recent Leisure and Arts piece on a group of N.C. postmasters visiting the US. HolocaustMemorial Museum in Washington, Cullowhee was identified as the "home of Western Carolina University and not much else." Talk about shoddy journalism! How could the WSJ overlook such heralded establishments as Moss General Store, Caveman Video and Major Pressley's barber shop? Clearly it's time to launch another letter-writing campaign. In fact, to the editors I say this: print a complete and immediate retraction, or cancel my subscription faster than Hillary Clinton can make $100,000 in cattle futures.
