  • 14 Sports March 17, 1994 Western Carolinian Mouton to kick box in Ramsey Derek Smolik StaffReporter Just a few short months ago Tommy Mouton became a world champion kickboxer. He wanted to set up a title defense locally but was unable to do so. He was then approached by a company that wanted to take him to the midwest to have him fight for them. Mouton went along with it when the company moved to Boise, Idaho. He had a car, a place to stay, all the doctors and trainers a fighter could need and lots of media attention. But it wasn't enough. Though he says that he doesn't know why he came back to North Carolina, he did. "Don't ask me why I came back," said Mouton with a thoughtful look on his face. The one thing that Mouton will say about his experience is that he saw a lot of the seedier side of kickboxing. Many of the people that had hired him to box for them would say things in public as if they were talking for him. "I don't like people trying to own me," Mouton said. "Everybody was trying to own me, and I didn't like that So Mouton came back to North Carolina and has begun training for a title defense fight in the Ramsey Center on April 28. Afterthathewilltakeonanotherfighter in Chicago for a world championship belt. Ed Mitchell, the world champion in his weight class in the Karate International Council of Kickboxers (K.I.C.K.), will go up against Mouton in May. "I'm very interested in working towards a fight in Ramsey," Mouton said with a big smile on his face. That's with good reason. He wanted to have a fight in Ramsey in December, but it fell through which led to his departure for Idaho. Mouton says that his living in and growing up in a small town has helped him keep hisperspectiveandhis religion. "I think that the whole thing (his leaving and coming back) has increased my faith/'Moutonsaid. "I love the mountains. I don't have any regrets." Mouton is not only working towards unifying all the different belts of the different associations of karate, but he also has a different, larger goal. "I want to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, not just the champion of my weight class," he said. Though it hasn't been that long since David Mount, Terry Welch, Tommy Mouton and Bud Wilcox finalize the details of the bout on April 28 (photo by ASB). « Moutonwontheworldtitleheisveryready for his first title defense. "I'm anxious, antsy. It's been since October, and I'm ready to fight," Mouton said. Mouton will be fighting John Cluse in the Ramsey Center on April 28. Mouton has a record of 27 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw including 27 KO's. Catamounts continue winning ways during break Derek Smolik StaffReporter WCU's baseball team continued to roll over their opponents during spring break. The Cats had their ten-game winning streak broken but rebounded to win seven in a row after that. Western's hitting, strangely silent during the first six games of the year, made its presence known to opponents beginning with the first game. Roy Hurst went from a .130 average to a .393 average over the break and was the spark for the offense. WCU-7, Citadel-1: Once again the Cats exploded at the plate as they pounded out 14 hits, including four homeruns, in their con- ferenceopener. Jason Beverlinsettled down after some early problems to get the complete game win with a career-high 17 strikeouts. •"■ OF P«» Large General Stock Over 10,000 Titles Discount with WCU Student ID Hours: 10 am - 5:30pm, Mon - Sat 586-1026 In Dillsboro at the Riverwood Shops On U.S. 441 between the two bridges WCU-3, Citadel-2: Western needed some help to get by the Bulldogs in the second game of the doubleheader. Two errors in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Cats to escape with a one-run victory. WCU-3, Citadel-2: Hurstbegan whatwould be the best three weeks of his career with a three-run homer. Hurst's three-run first- inning blast was all the offense the Cats would get, or need, in the one-run win. Kevin Rexrode picked up the win with eight strong innings. WCU-14, UNCC 5: Hurst and Stephen Pritchard both had homeruns, and Jody Henson picked up four hits in the Cats' easy win over the 49ers. Beverlin got his third win of the year. WCU-7, UNCC 3: The Cats won their tenth in a row as Hurst accounted for five of the Cats' seven runs in the win. Joe Jack Sellers won for the second time this year. WCU-7, Davidson-8: On the same day that the Wildcats'basketball team was eliminating the Cats, their baseball team ended Western's ten-game winning streak. The bullpen, perhaps tired from the long week, let a 7-1 lead slip away in the loss. WCU-7, Davidson-4: WCU came back to win the second game of the doubleheader as Rexrode remained undefeated for the year at 3-0. WCU-9, Davidson-7: Western almost let one slip away again as the Wildcats comeback fell short. Clark Maxwell picked up his second win of the year. WCU 10 Georgia 1: Beverlin won his fourth straight game as the Cats pounded Georgia 10-1 in Athens. Beverlin, the SC player-of-the-week, went nine strong innings to pick up the win. Heallowed only one runonfivehits, walked three and struck out 13. The lone Bulldog run came on a ground out. Hurst led the offensive explosion with four hits in five at-bats. The hits brought his average over the last eight games to 556 (20- 36). WCU-7, UNC-W-2: In rainy, windy conditions the Cats won in a sloppy, lackluster game. However, the Cats had more than enough for the outmanned Seahawks. Sellers (3-0) continued his winning ways, and Mike Tidick hit his third homer of the year. WCU-10, ETSU-8: Western looked to have the game well in hand with a 10-2 lead. The Cats pounded out ten hits, including five doubles in running out a big lead. Six ETSU runs were scored on six hits before Mike Manning shut the door. WCU-2, ETSU-1: The Cats had their lowest run total in ten games, but Rexrode's (4-0) pitching, with an assist from Manning, was , enough to lift the Cats. Eric Whitson's RBI double, followed by a single from Chad Moore, was all the Cats would score, but evenasevenftinningsolohomerun couldn't save the Bucs. WCU-13, ETSU-6: Hurst, Tony Home, John Connolly and Whitson «11 had at least two ' hits as the Cats pounded the Bucs to complete the three-game sweep. Home hit his second homerun of the season, and Whitson hi t two doubles to lead the offense. Maxwell won his third straight game as he allowed only one earned run on four hits. Spring Break?
