  • THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1977 Editorial: It was around 11:30 when I heard the noise. To me, a two-year veteran ot WCU, the sound was unmistakable — the murmuring rumble of a mass of people in the late evening hours in Cullowhee almost always means a panty-raid. Being the Thursday night before first summer session finals, I was somewhat surprised to be witness to the raid. However, it didn't take me long to remember it was one of the last nights of the first summer session and quite a few people would be heading home the next day. I reached back into my memory banks and what I came up with was a recognization of the simple fact that I myself had experienced the very same sort of "end of term release of tension." This same "release of tension," I began thinking, must be exhibited in most every student attending WCU or any other "institution of higher learning." But, individuals being as individual as they will — except in mobs or masses of people where coordinated behavior is the best way to survive the ordeal — various ways of working out this tension will be in evidence. Again this led to speculation; what other ways do people display this basic release of tension? Now, I am not a psychology major, but having lived the time I have, I've noticed people going out, running it off, drinking it away, studying it away, eating it away, crying it away, etc. There are numerous ways people work out their frustrations. One of the most surprising things to come out of this raid was the girls out of Harrill, rushing the mob of men already assembled outside. This assault lasted maybe two minutes before a hasty retreat was made, but apparently its purpose had been served. Cat-calls, and obscenities flew in both directions. The women demanded "streak, streak!" The men demanded... well I'm sure you have a good idea of what the overall thought behind the raid was. It was relatively peaceful with no side actually expecting to carry out its threats. Security was around trying to make sure no person or property was hurt or damaged. The only really bad thing about mobs is that they can deteriorate into brawls. As small as it may be, Cullowhee is where we must live for whatever period of time is chosen to be spent here during the year. Care must be taken to keep it as enjoyable a place to pass most of a year as it can possibly be. The next time you hear the sound of several hundred people massing to go around the campus, consider this: the girls can send water, trash, and anything else not bolted to the floor out the window and anything they do throw will have to land somewhere.
