  • 28 October 1993 Cullowhee, NC The Voice of the Catamounts Volume 59 Number 8 WCU's Mouton rules world Derek Smolik StaffReporter The Cat's top 25 ranked football team? Not good enough. Western's defending conference champion baseball team? Not even close. Because now Western Carolina University has a world champion! Western graduate student Tommy Mouton recently won the FFKA (Fighters Federation Kickboxers of America) 178 pound title. Mouton, a Sylva resident, beat Chris Getz of Escondido, CA to win the belt. Mouton, who is 30, has been fighting for about 12 years in both boxing and kickboxing. Until recently, though, he never had a shot at the title in his weight class. "I never got a break, fought all my life, fought hard, fought anybody, everybody. All my losses are to world champions," Mouton said. He finally got his shot a few years ago in a bout in St. Louis, MO. Unfortunately for Mouton, it didn't turn out as planned. Mouton'- brother-in-law, Earnest Smith (a member of the Karate Hall of Fame) came to St. Louis to see Mouton fight for the title. Smith was the man who taught Mouton how to fight, but eventually had to fight his own battle with cancer. WCU students scope out the job scene and rub elbows with prospective employers at the 1993 Career Day sponsored by the CAP Center. Year of the Advisor: Exchange of ideas ensues Jeff Leatherwood StaffReporter 1993 is known as the Year of the Advisor. This year has been devoted to the improvement of the relationship between the stu- dentand theadvisor. The hope is that through colloquies new levels of understanding can be reached. On October 7, a group of students met to share questions and answers with the advisory members of the faculty. According to Dr. Michael Malone of the Office of Academic Affairs, this forum came as a result of findings from the 1991 Year Of the Student meeting. The second session of the Year of the Advisor began Tuesday night, with the same faculty, members as the previous session. TOMMY MOUTON "[He] came to the fight I had in St. Louis. I had the flu, he was sick, coughing up blood, so I stayed up all night with him and didn't get any sleep." Mouton said. What happened at the fight? Mouton described nis performance as "terrible". It was so bad that he ;aid he didn't even want to look at his gloves after die fight. But he had been at it so long that the sport wouldn't die that easily. After a about a year and i half fate came calling in the form of a fight challenge from one of the best fighters in the world, Neil "Super" Singleton. "He [Singleton] was supposed to fight the number one contender, but he [the contender] reared so he didn't have to fight him and the other three guys [top contenders] backed down. So I said 'I'll fight you.' I just couldn't live with myself anymore," Mouton recalled. In what Mouton described as a "12-round war" Singleton, a seven-time world champion, was able to beat Mouton, but not until after both fighters had been knocked down. The fight went the full 12 rounds with Singleton winning by a single point in a split decision. "We both had swollen faces, we can both hit, hard. He told me after the fight, 'Man I didn't think that this was going to be like this'," Mouton also said. Mouton's fight with Singleton gained him enough respect to get his second title shot, this time against Llew Chester. Mouton would be ready for his chance this time. Chester was highly regarded going in, iiaving knocked out his last three opponents. Mouton, though, would turn the tables on Chester, knocking him out in four rounds, despite a separated shoulder he suffered in the second round of the match. "I kept fighting with the separated shoulder. The doctor tried to stop the fight, but my corner man daid, 'You stop the fight and you and I will get in a fight,' " Mouton said. From there the rest has been history. Mouton, 25-3 overall, has gone undefeated since winning the U.S. title and now holds the world title as a result of his win over Getz recently. Mouton has been preparing to make his first title defense since winning the title. He had hoped to hold it at the Ramsey Center in December, but has been unsuccessful in this so far. This has frustrated Mouton and has forced him to look at other venues, such as Indiana University, which has offered to host the fight. Mouton would prefer to have the fight here, but says he will do what he has to. Fracas resolved quietly See 'Advisor' pg 2 Hayley Nicholas Staff Reporter The October 25 court date of the WCU students allegedly involved in the September 24 fight that occurred at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house resulted in the quick resolution of a controversy that has sparked much debate and ill will. All trespassing and assault charges against Larry Goldston, Sean Cunningham, John [ohnson, Herb Streater and Jay Braithewaite were dismissed withoutadoorargument. Judge S. Bryant dismissed the charges against Goldston, Cunningham, and Johnson with the understanding that they were to avoid victim Kevin Inabinet and witnesses for the prosecution. Streaten and Braithewaite were dismissed without public comment. Larry Seago, lawyer for Streater and Braithewaite, stated that charges were withdrawn when the prosecution was confronted with the formidable case he had assembled on behalf of his clients. Several witnesses described as objective had been called to testify as to the innocence of the accused. Seago expressed disappointment that the case had been dismissed before innocence could be proven. Head football coach Steve Hodgin expressed a similar sentiment by stating, "I felt all along they were innocent. It's unfortunate it didn't go to trial." He added, "Even though it was dismissed, their rights were somewhat violated." Kevin Inabinet and other involved members of Sigma Phi Epsilon were unavailable or unwilling to comment.
