  • NOVEMBER 15, 1947 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE THREE Mountaineers Stop Cats For 20-0 Win At Boone, Nov. 8 The Cats, after playing the very potent App's off their feet for almost three periods, were victims of a deadly passing attack that counted for two T. D.'s Nov. 8 at Boone. The" Cat forward wall had completely stopped the ground attack led by the highly rated Hollars and Murdock when Mills uncorked the two aerials that spelled defeat for the Cats. The first two periods were dominated by the play of the Cats, who rolled up 49 yards to the App. 30 and allowed not one 1st down while the Cats picked up two, driving to the App. 20 and 30-yard line only to have the attack stopped either by penalty or fumbles. Outstanding performances were turned in by Clark* Pennell, who was a constant thorn in App. offense; Art Byrd, who was able to throw opponents for many losses; Ralph Humphries and Dan Robinson, who continued to give out with their stellar line play. Jim Bryson, Von Ray Harris, Ralph McConnell, (ivie Heavner gave out star performances. Jack (Plutus) Arrington and Ralph Clark kept the Apps guessing with their quarterbacking. Swimmers Needed For New Club "The newly organized swimming club of W. C. T. C. needs- additional members," stated Jake Atkinson, newly elected secretary. The club meets each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 4:30. Persons wishing to join should come to the club meetings. The only requirement for membership is to be able to swim fairly well, Atkinson said. The newly elected officers are, in addition to Atkinson, president. Warren Deyermond; vice- president, Frank Dorsey; program manager, Gus l^ayo. The club is planning, with the help of Marion McDonald, physical education director, to stage shows here at the college and at other places in this area. Newberry Takes Kittymounts 13-7 The Kittymounts were handed a 13-7 defeat by the Indians of Newberry on November 1. They were off to a fine start by making a touchdown the second play after taking the ball. The touchdown was made by a 35-yard pass from Seltzer to Allison. Hardin converted to put the Cats in the lead. Not to be outdone the Indians came back in the second quarter with a beautiful 50-yard pass for a touchdown and a tie in the score. Long plunging gains set up another score in the third period of the Indians. The rest of the game went without any scoring but the Catamounts plunged to within 10 yards of the opponents goal many times but bogged down each time. Meet Eight women students represented the college and the phyical education department last week in Greensboro and Durham. They were attending meetings related to their major fields of physical education and recreation. The group left last Friday, by train, and arrived in Greensboro that evening in preparation for the Saturday program at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. This program was a Field Day sponsored jointly by the college and. the North Carolina Association of Federated College Women. Nancy Blanton and June Wright took part in the swimming matches and were members of a* four-girl team which won the novelty relay event. Miss Wright also placed in one other event and Miss Blanton was commended for her swimming style. The girls were particularly concerned with ! the manner of conducting the pro- jgram, so, did much observation in techniques of organization and officiating. Etheridge Carries Ball For Winning Touchdown The Cats took the field Oct. 25 before a capacity crowd of some 3,000 determined to break into the win column after suffering two consecutive defeats. It looked as though they were to be denied a victory again, as they went scoreless for three periods. The change took place when Clark Pennell, team captain and stalwart guard, broke through the Bear forward wall to block Char- le's kick and recover for the important first pointer. Ralph Clark, quarterback, converted the point after to tie the score at seven all. With only two minutes remaining in the game the Cats kicked off to the Bears and it looked as though the game would end in a tie. The Bears, not to be content with a tie, attempted three aerials —Turn to Page Four H & H Radio Service Room I Madison RADIOS & RECORD PLAYERS REPAIRED PHONE 291 Western Carolina has acquired one valuable piece of property recently. Have you noticed the new stands? After a long wait they have arrived as some of the students know since they had to stand up at a football game until they were set up. The stands will serve a three-fold purpose, football, basketball and baseball. This winter they will be moved into the gym and next Spring out to the baseball diamond. By the way, the diamond will be changed somewhat from last year. For basketball it is planned to tear out the wooden - box - type stands on the right of the front doors of the gym giving more floor space for P. E. classes. This set of stands is one of the things the administration has bought in an effort to advance athletics at Western North Carolina and one of the most valuable. Our football team has had consistent trouble this year after they get within the opponents 20 yard line, but they've started clicking now so look out. Last year Michigan didn't find themselves until mid-season and look at them now. Maybe we will be the same. Some people have mentioned the- T-formation as being better than the single- wing. What may I ask is wrong with the single-wing? We aren't having trouble getting across the goal line because of the system (I think its the breaks we've had). What you need when you get down near the opponents goal line is power: well the single-wing is noted for its power much more so than the "T". Just watch closely from here on because our boys are out for victories. Basketball practice is underway in great fashion. We should have it this year. Of course two valuable men were lost in Jim and "Ike" and tall men are a little scarce around here. Vou know some coaches in colleges won't look at a basketball player unless he is over 6 feet; well that won't happen here. 1 would like to venture a prediction. The two outstanding men this year will be Barnhorst, team captain, and Bob McGinn. These won't be the only good boys out there but I think they will have a great year. Some of the new freshmen look good, a trifle small, but they are fine ball handlers, something not usually found in as many boys at once. SOSSAMON FURNITURE CO.
