  • W\ WCU counseling programs get national accreditation RUSSELL K. THOMPSON Thompson new vice-president, city executive at SNB Russell K. Thompson, Jr. has been appointed to vice-president and city executive officer for Southern National Bank in Burlington. An Alamance County native, Thompson earned his master's degree in education from WCU, and his bachelor's degree in education from the UNC, Chapel Hill Thompson and his wife, Karen S. Thompson, have two children: Adam and Sara Kathryn. Two graduate programs in counseling offered by Western Carolina University's department of human services recently earned unconditional accreditation at the national level through the year 2000. The WCU programs in school counseling and community counseling are now officially sanctioned for seven years by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), a national organization offering a stringent voluntary accreditation process. James Morrow, who coordinates the counseling programs, led the programs in an extensive self-study last summer, including a 400 page report for review by CACREP. Representatives of the organization visited campus last fall to observe the programs and facilities firsthand. Only 87 schools in the nation have earned the accreditation, including four in North Carolina: Appalachian State University; North Carolina State University; Universityof North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Theunconditional accreditation is the rarest and most extensive the CACREP confers. Programs typically get conditional two-year endorsement. Preparing for the accreditation review meant raising the counseling program's admissions standards and expanding the programs to two years, Morrow said. With the national accreditation, graduates of the program now will be eligible to apply for advantageous "National Counselor Certification." Western Carolina has 90 students enrolled in the community and school counseling programs, which originated when WCU began offering counseling courses inthel950's. The department of human services also offers an intermediate program leading to a certificate of advanced study in counseling. Dunn gets Co-op Student of the Year Award Dana Dunn of Swannanoa has been selected to receive the firstCrisp, Hughes and Co. Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award at WCU. Crisp, Hughes is a regional accounting firm with offices in Asheville, Boone, Burnsville, Sylva and Greenville, S.C. Dunn, who recently received a bachelor's degree in Nursing from WCU, helda cooperativeeducation position with St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville and won a Quality Improvement Award there in 1992. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan F. Moneyhun of Swannanoa. At Western, she has been an officer with the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students and attended that group's national convention in 1993. The Crisp, Hughes/WCU Cooperative Education Student of the Year Award includes a $300 cash award and engraved plaque. DANA DUNN (photo by Mark HaskettfOPI) Schulz Scholarship Fund established The Jane B. Schulz Scholarship Fund has been established at WCU to assist undergraduate students pursuing studies in special education. Schulz is a professor of education emeritus and is a widely-regarded expert on integrating the handicapped into the main stream of life. She is the author of two text books—"Mainstreaming Handicapped Students: A Guide for Classroom Teachers" and "Parents and Professionals in Special Education." She retired from the WCU faculty in 1989 after 17 years of service. When the total value of the fund reaches $10,000, scholarships will be awarded to students based on the following guidelines: 1) applicants must be full- time WCU students; 2) applicants must have completed 30 semester hours with a minimum grade-point-ayerage of 3.0; and 3) preference will be given to late entry students whose initial entrance to college is at least two calendar years after high school graduation. The third criterion is one with which Schulz is quite familiar. She had barely begun college when she was married and started a family—three sons and a daughter. When the youngest was a kindergart- ner, 20 years later, she went back to college tocompletea bachelor's degree. Eventually she earned her bachelor's, master's and doctorate from Auburn University. Adding to the challenge was the fact that oneof her sons has Downs syndrome. Instead of letting that handicap impede either her or him, Schulz became a nationally known authority in special education and her son attained a level that many people, sometimes including Dr. Schulz herself, did not think was possible. As Schulz recalled in one of her publications, "My son and I were guest speakers at a meeting attended by over 100 parents and teachers of handicap ped children. After my presentation I sat and watched as my son showed slides and told the audience about his work, his family, and his trailer. It was an awesome moment for me. I thought back to over 25 years ago, when he was banging his head on the floor, a time when I never dreamed thathe would achieve the life-style he was now describing. But then I realized that 25 years ago, my speaking to such an audience was also a remote possibility." "We hope establishment of the Jane Schulz Scholarships can make such possibilities less remote for another bright student in special education," said Charles M. Ambrose, WCU assistant to the chancellor for university advancement.
