  • Western Carolinian July 15,1993 Page 3 Western Carolinian Editor: Danell Moses Adviser: John Moore Associate Editors: Leanne Doerner - Sports Blake Frizzell - Features Rachel Ramsey - News Jon Patty-Classifieds/ Events Office Manager: Brad Moses Production: Juliana Ferguson Writers: Trey Colvard Brett Ferguson Derek Smolik Colleen Vasconcellas Photographers: Mark Mitchell Chris Houck The Western Carolinian is the student newspaper of Western Carolina University. The Western Carolinian welcomes editorial input, news tips, article ideas, etc. Correspondence should be addressed to: Editor, Western Carolinian PO Box 66 Cullowhee, NC 28723 or sent through campus mail to The Old Student Union. Office personnel may be reached at 227-7267 or by fax at 227- 7361. In an effort to save natural resources the Western Carolinian is rwnted on recycled paper. Local ordinances needed to control smoke Dear Editor: Passive smoking is not only annoying, it is now life- threatening... officially. On January 7 1993, the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified second-hand tobacco smoke a s a Class A carcinogen which can cause cancer in those who are forced to breathe it. This puts such smoke in a class with radon, benzene, asbestos and arsenic, the ruling reinforces many earlier warnings heart disease in non-smokers. Yet, the NC General Assembly is now considering a bill (HB957 - "Regulate Smoking in Public Places") which would mandate that a't least 25% of designated enclosed spaces must be set aside for smoking; it would also prevent local governments from enacting more stringent ordinances after the bill's proposed effective date of October 1, 1993. It has passed the house and is now in the Senate's Judiciary I Committee. Those who are concerned about protectingtheirhealth, including that of infants and children, who are even more vulnerable, can do two things.. right now: 1) Contact their NC Senators to urge them to vote against it; and 2) Contact their city, town and county officials, asking them to pass local ordinances to restrict smoking in public places, instead of waiting for the decision to be made for them according to the Raleigh formula. The effective date of the bill was amended from July 1 to October 1 in the House. Such local ordinances are not designed to stop people from smoking; it is only a question of where they can do so, and of protecting the safety of non-smokers. This is also a question of local control... and just plain, common-sense. Bob Tinkler OI*l'*ut*d by TiR«m# Mmfli S«rvte*« Revolution! Carolinian experiences change DANELL MOSES Dear Readers: Revolution. What is it about that word that is so stirring? Is it because the Beanies sang about it? Is it because almost everything touched by American hands has been revolutionary? We may never know, but revolution is what the Western Carolinian will experience this next year! First of all, as you may have already noticed, we are changing our size to a tabloid. Not only does this help us out economically, but it should also provide convenience to the readers. Not only will it fit nicely folded into a textbook, but it is also easier to hold up and read without tiring one's arms! Secondly, we plan to feature more articles about students and WCU graduates. I think it is important to see what we as students are doing now and what our predecessors havedone after graduation. Some new sections are being added. Careers pages will list job offerings. These are of extreme interest to seniors! The listings are also of great value to under class members who may be interested in a career but not know what the general requirements are to fill that type of position. There will be more offered in the area of entertainment as well. The movie review has proven entertaining, so we're also adding band reviews, music reviews, and some occasional book reviews. All in all, our goal at the newspaper is not only to provide you, the reader, with news butalso to make you feel like youare getting your money's worth. Some things remain constant form previous year. We hope to provide thorough news, features and sports coverage. Also, the Western Ca rolinian has had good layout and design along with attractive advertisements. We hope to compete against other collegiate newspapers in a national competition at the end of the year. We'll let you know how it turns out. The last thing that will change is the editorial input. Aside from my writing a weekly editorial, I also hope to have some other weekly columnists. Perhaps we can spark some provoking ideas or at least some stimulating conversation! It make take a little while to get things organized in a way with which most of us can agree. These things take time. Please, be patient with our revolution! At least it won't be as bumpy a ride as the one to Asheville. And our "face-lift" should be settled down in a few months, unlike the state's! I look forward to hearing from you; have a good second session. WESTERN CAROLINIAN SUBSCRIPTION OFFER The Western Carolinian is available by subscription for $1.00 per issue.
