  • The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday. April 22, 1993 Features Volume 58 Number 24 Pick of the Flicks Baseball, childhood memories merge in The Sandlot Dan Warlick Film Critic Heroes are remembered. Legends never die. Each of us has one chance in life to become a hero *r a legend in someone's mind, and if we follow our hearts to do what we sincerely believe is the best thing to do, we will inevitably do something great for someone and will never^go wrong. This simple, yet profound, message is eloquently expressed in The Sand- lot. The year is 1962. Schools are out on summer vacation. For one group of inseparable boys, it is a time for care-free existence. No worries, Contributed photo by Randy Sewell Pictured above is one exhibit from Randy Sewell's art exhibition "Birds, Lizards and Wieners," ironwork. The exhibition will open Tuesday, April 13 and continue through May 7 at the Chelsea Gallery in the U.C. no hassles, and nothing could possibly ruin these wonderfully innocent days of youth. But for Scotty Smalls, the summer of '62 becomes a summer of blossoming friendships. Scotty tries his best to be accepted by a group of eight avid baseball fanatics. Unfortunately, they learn too quickly how little Scotty knows about the game. Scotty (Tom Guiry) is the buffoon of the bases, the ignoramus of innings, the absolute clutz in cleats. He can't catch. He can't throw. He can't hit. He doesn't even know who Babe Ruth is. Naturally, the gang of enthusiasts converge on him like buzzards on rotting flesh. That is, all but the true leader of the gang, Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez (Mike Vitar), who tucks Scotty under his wing and molds him into a team player. This motley gang of nine indiscriminate adolescents run, play, and swim as any typical teens would. They also have a talent for finding troubles. Scotty's first home- run thrusts them in the most perilous predicament of their entire short lives. Only friendship, adolescent ingenuity, and courage will allow them to overcome the plightof a peer. The boys in this movie deliver a stunning performance. Their energy seems endless. The comraderie of the cast resembles the chemistry of the cast of Stand By Me oxThe Wonder Years. The Sandlot deserves four out of five stars for acting, creativity, and delivery. While some potential viewers may shy away from its PG rating, still can delight the kid in each of us. Cool World has a strong female character Peggy Belsha Staff Intern Cool World is one of those half-animated movies that stars Gabirel Byrne, Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger as the voluptuous Holli Would. The question in this movie is, "What wouldn't she?" The plot to this movie concerns two worlds. One is the "Cool World" that is made up of cartoons created by the human cartoonist, Jack Deebs (played by Gabriel Byrne). The other is the human world. Holli Would wants to end her career as a "doodle" (cartoon) and cross over into the human world and, obviously, become human. Believe me, Holli is a far cry from Roger Rabbit. She is not your typical human female.either. She looks like a 6'3", 105 lb., DDD cup, 17 inch waist bimbo who struts around in very skimpy outfits; in other words, Kim Basinger to a tee. Being a feminist myself, I don't like using the word "bimbo." But it seems to work in this case, at first. Initially, I hated the character Holli Would. I admit that I had pre-judged this film as being a chauvinistic, exploitive and sexist video. At the end of the movie, I realized ...I realized what a strong and independent female-type Holli really was." what a strong and independent female-type Holli really was. Yes, this video is full of sexual innuendoes. It starts out during the credits with adance song as the theme music with a sexy female voice purring, "Play With Me." Othersongs were titled, "Sex on Wheels", "Let's Have Sex", "Let's Make Love", and the more tame "Ah-Ah." A funny one was "The Devil Does Drugs." The dialogue was pretty tacky, too. One interesting quote made by Holli in reference to human women was, "When they taste something, they really taste it and when they do it with a man...oooh they really do it." Another character, detective Frank Harris said, "I'm like a plug without a socket." I won't get into that one. Although I personally would have liked to have seen this hunky detective in more skimpy outfits. The climax of this movie comes when Holli Would and her counterpart, JackDeebs (the cartoonist) make love and Holli becomes human. This upsets the balance of nature and almost destroys the whole universe. Holli will sleep with any human who will take her to the other side, as many as it will take. She flaunts her body mercilessly, but she does it for the same reason as many other women in the world do it — to get what they want. That is why I see her as independent and strong. "Fronteir" continued from page 3 mattress in the middle and let it settle evenly. Since the mattresses were stuffed with com shucks and straw from the com crib, it's easy to figure out the old saying "don't let the bed bugs bite." The beds of this time were appropriately called rope beds. If the ropes came loose, the bed would become unstable or again the middle child could get sandwiched in. For this you needed a rope winder. One rope held the whole bed together and the rope had to be tightened from the top right comer of the bed and pulled through to the bottom left comer of the bed. This is also where the phrase "sleep tight" originated. People of this time didn't bathe often. Even though you slept in close quarters, it was thought that body fluids prevented sickness. Anyone who bathed too often was accused of spreading disease. Doors were often carried from one home to another. People who had a family or favorite loom design would etch the design in a door to keep the pattern with them. Some cabins were of a German influence. Housewives used a dutch oven for cooking. The oven isn't really Dutch at all. Dutch oven came from a mispronunciation of Deutch, which is of the German language. With a dutch oven, you could place coals on top of the oven and bake goodies inside. The wife spent on average two hours per meal in the kitchen. Talk about slaving over a hot stove! Other utensils used were a meat broiler and a toaster. A potato roaster and wafer iron were used in a fireplace along with a waffle iron. Both the wafer and waffle iron, cold only cook one waffle or wafer at a time. Trammels hung from the top or fluke of the fireplaces. The different trammels allowed the wife to cook in pots at low and high heat on the same fire. A fire only burned in the center of the fireplace, leaving the wife with room to move coals and fire around to cook many things at once. Cabin shingles let light through, but no rain leaked in. Only snow could fall into the cabin. The shingles on acabin sometimes bowed up from installing them on the wrong side of the moon. Shingles installed during the new moon stay flat because of the lack of gravitational pull. Shingles installed during an old or full moon will bow. The moon exerts enough of a gravitational pull on the shingles to actually pull the moisture in the shingles up, bowing the shingles towards the sky. So modem life in the Appalachians was not like life today, though they did have the same basic necessities. The men and women had different roles to play in daily life in order to survive. It seems that every day in the Appalachians revolved around food and simply surviving. A private WCU screening of... tom Jack demi cruise nicholson moore ..
