  • Volume 58 Number 2f> Sports The Western Carolinian Page 7 Wednesday, April 7. 1993 Grundy leads Cats past UNC-A again Leanne Doerner Sports Writer Phillip Grundy's grand slam homerun led Western Carolina past UNC- Asheville for the second time this season, by a final score of 10-7. The Bulldogs beat the Catamounts once earlier in the season in Asheville, but this win was Western's second consecutive since that loss. Going into the top of the ninth inning, the score was 6-4 in favor of Western Carolina. The Cats made a pitching change, bringing in Mike Manning for Derek Cockrell. Manning retired the first Bulldog batter he faced on a ground out to first. Mark Allen came up next for the Bulldogs and reached on a walk, he later scored on a single. The Bulldogs put together three straight singles to score three runs and take the lead at 7-6. After that, it was Western Carolina's turn to shine. With one out and two men on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Chad Moore came to the plate. But Moore popped out to the short-stop for the second out of the inning. Next, Scott Lyman came up and walked, loading up the bases for Grundy. The pitch came to Grundy and he smacked it out of the stadium for a grand slam homerun and a 10- 7 Catamount win. "The bigger the situation is, the better hitter Grundy is," said Head Coach Keith LeClair. "I felt like the right man was up." WCU played well defensively, committing just one error compared to the Bulldogs five. Despite only getting four hits in the game, the Catamounts were able to score ten runs. Asheville brought in only sevens off of 14 hits. "Although we didn't swing the bat, we were able to score ten runs on four hits," said LeClair. "The hits we got we scored big on." The Catamounts committed their only error in the game during the first inning on an overthrow from shortstop to first baste, allowing the Bulldog base runner to reach base. In the bottom of the first inning, Chad Moore was able to get on base on an error by the Bulldog catcher. Moore would later score on a single by Grundy. During the sixth inning, Catamount pitcher Brad Tweedlie was re- Mike Tidick placed by freshman Derek Cockrell, after giving up four runs in the game. The Cats turned a double play to end the sixth inning and get out of a jam. Tidick SC player of week Third straight Cats player to win award Derek Smolik Sports Editor Mike Tidick, a junior outfielder for Western Carolina was named Southern Conference player of the week for his play during the last week's five games. She is a woman with hopes and dreams, just like the rest of us. Lyons is 22 and will be graduating this May with a BSBA degree is accounting. She will be returning to Elizabethton, Tennessee, her hometown, to look for a job. "I'm looking for a job in East Tennessee right now," Lyons said. "Somewhere close to Elizabethton." She would like to work for a company or as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Lyons will be taking the CPA exam in May and depending on how well she does, she may go the CPA route. "I've always been taught that grades were really important and I've tried my best," Lyons said. Other interests, besides basketball include golf, softball and about any other sport. Lyons likes all types of outdoor recreation and does not like being cooped up inside. On the day of the interview, it was really warm and sunny out. She had lots of studying to do, but couldn't keep her mind off the beautiful weather. For the guys out there wondering if there is a special someone in her life—there is. He is a school teacher and coach in Elizabethton. (That's one of her main reasons for going back to Tennessee.) Lyons' future plans include first, finding a job, marriage and children, but absolutely no coaching. When asked if she would ever like to coach, she replied "I'm not going to coach... I could not handle it...it's a stressful job." As she looks back on her four years here at Western, she's very happy. Lyons has made many friends and feels that she has become more assertive because she didn't know anyone when she got here and had to make herself meet people. Also, she's glad that she was just far enough from home to be mainly on her own, but close enough not to lose touch. "It's been a good experience for me," Lyons said. "I've really enjoyed it." Lori Lyons Career Highlights: • Averaged 18.3 points per game her senior year and 12.9 for her career as a Cat. • She scored 1249 points in her ca reer at Western and is ranked 10th all-time on the Western Carolina scoring list. • Equaled NCAA 1992-93 single game high with 48 points. The total also was the highest ever for a Western Carolina player and tied for the highest ever in Southern Conference history. •Was selected to the GTE Academic All-American team in 1992.
