  • The^vVestern Carolinian Voice of the Students Thursday, March 6,1980 Vol. XLV, No. 23 Housing rumors laid to rest Some answers to questions Several issues ago the Western Carolinian reported several rumors that were circulating around campus. The following is a follow-up to those rumors. The issue of housing has always been a big item here at WCU. One of the main complaints with housing is community assessments. About a month ago residents of Benton were fined for damages done to their dorm. The residents wanted to know why, if they had been already fined, had the repairs not been made. In a phone conversation with Randy Rice, head of Housing, Mr. Rice stated that due to a large work load it is not always possible to repair all damages done during the same academic semester. What is usually done is repairing the main damage so that it will be serviceable temporarily and then fully repair the damages during the summer session when there are not as many students on campus. Asked about the validity of community assessments, Mr. Rice stated that while there was no legislation, that he knows of personally, that gives the university the right to collectively assess the residents, it is in fact a generally accepted form of action used by all types of institutions. Mr. Rice also stated that it is' a misconception that the students are paying the same amount in assessment as the actual cost. The university only charges for what the original item cost them. So, as cost goes up, the university still only charges the original amount invested into an item such as a door. On the issue of room deposit refunds, Mr. Rice stated that students are given from the beginning of summer to December 24th to file for a refund. This is intended to give the students as much time as possible to file for a refund. Another rumor that circulated around campus was that the sororities in Walker would be moving into Scott Inside today... and Walker would become a male dorm. Mr. Rice stated that while this move had been considered, it was decided that it was not necessary. One thing that did come out was that Mr. Rice confirmed that the residents of at least four of the five floors in Walker would have to rip out their carpet. It seems that in November a state insurance inspector sent a letter stating that the carpets in Walker did not meet the state fire safety requirements. However one of tin- floors was just recently recarpeted by a contractor in Franklin. Though the state says that the carpet does not meet the safety specification, the contractors say that it does. The outcome is yet to be decided. Later in an interview with Chancellor Robinson, a few questions were put to him concerning the parking situation here on campus. Dr. Robinson stated that if a deck parking facility was built it would cost the students between 75-100 dollars a year to park there. He went on to state that the administration is looking into possible improvements in the vacinity of Harrill and Buchannon. One last note for you commuters. Chancellor RohinsQj stated th;;t CGBtfary io popular belief there is more than adequate parking space for everyone. Please try to remember that the next time you find yourself walking a long way to class. Who's John Anderson? POLITICAL FOOTNOTES By Lee Grant The big news in the race for the presidency is John Anderson, Representative from Illinois and up to now the darkest of the dark horses. With onlv two_dclegate votes to his credit, Mr. Anderson had little realistic hopes of getting back into the pack of frontrunners. In the debates in Iowa Mr. Anderson looked impressive as he did last month in the New Hampshire primary. In that primary a victory for Anderson meant that he would get 8 percent of the vote. In fact, Rep. Anderson received not 8 but 10 percent of the vote. Picking up 2 delegate votes, Anderson moved ahead of John Connally and just behind Sen. Howard Baker. With this move Anderson started ,to obtain more support financially and started obtaining more and more volunteers. Anderson after New Hampshire stated that he would hope to obtain around 17 percent of the vote in Massachusetts. According to the results Anderson came in not fourth or third like he had hoped for, but second in both the Mass. and Vermont primaries, obtaining approximately 31-32 percent of the vote in each instance. This moves Anderson into third place ahead of Howard Baker who must now reevaluate his entire campaign before he decides whether or not to stay in the race. Turn to page 4. please More baseball. Spring Break Hours Hunter Library Saturday March 8 Sunday March 9 Monday-Friday, March 10-14 Saturday March 15 Sunday March 16 8a.m - 5 p.m. Closed 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Closed 12 noon-12 midnight A wave of vandalism hits WCU over the weekend, causing over $1000 damage to various buildings on campus. According to Pritchard Smith, Director of WCU's Traffic and Security Office, no suspects have been taken into custody as of yet. According to Smith, windows were either kicked or punched out in Hunter Library, the M/E Building, Stillwell, Killian, and in the Natural Science Building. A total of 17 separate incidents were recorded. Traffic and Security Officers were able to lift several good sets of fingerprints and obtained blood samples from one of the vandals when he apparently cut himself while breaking one of the windows. Several suspects are being investigated, some of them local high school students. The school is offering a $100 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of any of those involved in the incidents. All information will be held in strict confidence.
