Nuemann 1:57.83 Track starts season Derek Smolik Sports Editor The Western Carolina men's and women's indoor track teams started off their seasons last weekend at die Clemson Opener Meet with strong showings. Von Ross led the women's team widi first place finishes in both the long jump and triple jump. In the process of winning die long jump Ross met die provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA indoor championship meet with ajumpof20feet 3 and 1/2 inches. Other strong women's performances were turned in by Rita Roberts, who finished third in the 3000 in a school record time of 10:36 and Elizabeth Ransom, who Finished third in the mile with a time of 5:32. Head Coach Danny Williamson stressed that everybody on the team ran well and that most set personal bests in the meet. "We participated in this meet to see where we are in relationship to last season and we found out that we are well ahead of where we were at the same time last year," Williamson said. Shawn Miller led the men placing first in the long jump, second in the high jump, and third in the triple jump. He also had a strong time of 7.76 in the preliminaries ol the 55 meter hurdles. Both the men's and women's team's will get a chance to rest for the next few week's as the next meet is January 8th, at Clemson. Briefs & Intramurals • Head Football Coach Steve Hodgin was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year recently by the SC Sports Media Association. After only getting five wins in his first two seasons at the helm of the Cats, Hodgin led Western to a 7-4 record and second in the conference. • Junior offensive lineman Thomas Jackson of WCU was named to the GTE Academic All-District Football squad. Jackson was the only WCU player named to the team, but the Southern Conference led all other conferences with seven players on the squad. • Sign-ups for Basketball teams (Men's & Women) begin Tuesday, January 12th and end Wednesday, January 20th at 3:00 pm. For more information come by or call Reid office #13 (227-7477). • Sign-ups for men's and women's slam dunk competition begin on Tuesday, January 12th and end on Tuesday January 25th. The compe tition will occur on Tuesday, January 26th at 4:00 pm in the Ramsey Auxiliary Gym. • Intramural One-on-One basketball sign-ups begin on Thursday, January 21st and end on January 28th at 3:00 pm. The tournament will occur on Thursday, January 28th at 4:00 pm in the Reid upper Gyms. The classifications will be (women) 5'6 & under, 5'6 & over, (men) 6'0 & under, and 6'0 & over. • Intramural Basketball freethrows (men, women, and co-ed) will occur in Reid's upper gyms on Wednesday, January 20th from 4:00-5:30 pm. • The Intramural 3-on-3 basketball tournament, sponsored by Schick for men and women will occur Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00 pm in the Reid Gym upper courts.
