  • It's easier to ■ become a pilot A new Cessna Pilot Center (CPC), featuring Cessna's integrated Flight Training System which has reduced the time required to become a pilot, will open October 21 at the Jackson County Airport. Included in grand opening activities will be audiovisual presentations and other activities of interest to pilots, prospective students and their families. Included in the day's activities will be airplane rides for those interested in flying the new Cessna planes. The cost is 3 cents per pound. Developed by Cessna Aircraft Company after several years of study and extensive testing, the system features a programmed learning concept which combines ground school and flight training taught separately by most flight schools—into an integrated curriculum. Ramsey noted that a recent survey among persons learning to fly at Cessna Pilot Centers throughout North America showed a significant decrease in time required to earn a private pilot lisense. He also noted that more than 96% of all CPC students who have taken the required written examinations to qualify for a private pilot's license have passed on the first attempt. "Test scores," Ramsey said, "generally have been in the 80's and 90's." A score of 70 or better is required to make the student eligible to take the flight check to qualify for licensing. | Volleyball team splits six games OCTOBER 19, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 of the evening, Western took UNC-A in two sets, 15-12 and 15-8. WCU continued its winning ways in the first of two matches at Lenoir-Rhyne College Saturday by defeating UNC-Wilmington, 15-4 and 15-11, but dropped the second to Lenoir-Rhyne, 15-12 and 15-7. Despite what Coach Peele labeled "two pretty good performances," Western lost twice in Johnson City, Tennessee Monday evening to host East Tennessee State, 15-9 and 15-10, and Tennessee Tech, 17-15 and 15-11. Coach Peele will take her team to Boone this weekend for the Appalachian State University tournament, Friday and Saturday. Enrollment increases (CPS)—First estimates of fall enrollment in American colleges and universities see an increase of 2.8 percent over last fall's level. The National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) expects a total of 11.6 million on campus, 320,000 more than 1977's 11.28 million. If the estimates prove true—the Center won't have final figures until the spring—this will be the second consecutive autumn increase. Many schools, though, are still trying to recover from the fall of 1976, when enrollment in public colleges and universities dropped a precipitious nine percent. And many administrators are still preparing for drops in the future. Demographers say the nation simply won't be producing enough 18-year-olds in the 1980's to allow schools to maintain their course diversity and physical plant, some analysts also think that fewer 18-year-olds will enroll in college in the future because of a predicted slackening of demand for educated workers. Specifically, by 1980 there should be some 4.2 million 18-year-olds who might go to college. By 1990, that number will fall to 3.4 million. Even fewer 18-year-olds will be available to populate the campuses in the early 1990's. Look out below! The WCU women's volleyball team split six games in a hectic four day span. Coach Betty Peele's team, now 14-7 on the season, swept a pair Friday night at Breese Gymnasium from Guilford and UNC-Asheville. The Lady Cats lost the opening set to Guilford, 15-7, but came back to win the match with 15-11 and 15-5 scores.
