Robertson StaffWriter The Pacers of USC-Aiken pounded Catamount pitchers Wednesday in Cullowhee, connecting for 16 hits and 18 runs in aroutof Western Carolina, 18-3. "I think we're okay," said Catamount Baseball coach Jack Leggett. We just had a bad day. "We had one of those days when everything just snowballs...right from the beginning," added Leggett. The loss dropped Western to 29-16 overall, and remainlO-1 in the Southern Conference. Western ended the game with ten hits and only one error. USC-Aiken, (33-10), jumped off to an early lead by scor- WCU-Citadel: Showdown for all the marbles ing three in the first inning, a lead they would not relinquish. In the third inning, Pacers' Chris Dorsey and Darryl Dupert ripped home runs to left left field off WCU starter Mike Thomas, expanding their lead to 5-0. The Pacers threatened in the fourth with two men on and only one out, when a ball hit deep to right field was intercepted over the shoulder of Catamount outfielder Joey Cox. Western scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth on a 380 foot two-out homer to left field, hit by Junior Matt Raleigh. Aiken continued their hitting spree in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Four of the Tony Bolick Sports Editor This weekend will be the big showdown at Ronnie Childress Field for the Southern Conference title and the first-round bye as the number one seed in the conference tournament. Saturdays action between The Citadel Bulldogs and the Western Carolina Catamounts gets underway at 12:15 on Saturday with ;a doubleheader and ends Sunday af- ; ter the single game scheduled to be- Igin at 1 p.m.* The Citadel comes into the game with a 14-1 record to the Cats' 10-1 record in the conference. Rain- outs with Marshall and last weekend's series at Furman leaves Western just out of a first place tie wilh the Bulldogs. "It is the biggest conference series I've been involved with in my time at Western Carol ina," said ninth- year head coach Jack Leggett. Leggett has the starting ro- . tation ready but it is a little shaky on '■ how Junior Patrick Kendrick is feeling after suffering a pulled muscle on Monday. "We'll go with Grundy (Phillip) in the first game and Kendrick or (Jack) Kimel in the second game, depending on how Kendrick feels. He' 11 either go S atur- day or Sunday. Special guest Wayne Tolleson, former WCU all-star football and baseball Catamount, will toss out the opening pitch for the games on Saturday. Tolleson played 10 seasons in the American League playing infield for Texas, Chicago, and the New York Yankees. Both teams will enter the series in a very familiar position. The Cats won five consecutive titles before finishing second to the Bulldogs last season and losing in the championship of the tournament. Western went to the NCAA regional playoffs each of their championship seasons and last year, the Citadel went one step better. After defeating the Cats in the conference championship, they went on to shock Miami, Fla. in the regional finals and gain an entrance into the College World Series. Last season, Western met the Bulldogs in their conference opening series and were swept in Charleston, SC. The remainder of the season was spent chasing The Citadel in the quest for the title. Western had their chance in the Championship Game of the tournament only to fall, 9-5, after committing four errors in the game and surrendering 5 runs in a big second inning that doomed the Cats. The Catamounts will hold a slight edge in the ballgames this weekend by virtue of their being at home, beyond that, this series is up for grabs. Western Carolina is currently in the midst of a rebound after losing four of five games against nationally-ranked ACC-powers N.C. State and Clemson. The Cats had only lost two of their last twelve games. In between, WCU had a ten game winning streak before losing yesterday to the USC-Aiken Pacers. Currently, the Bulldogs have the conference's best pitching and Western has the best hitting in the league. Kevin Bellomo and Matt Raleigh lead the Southern Conference in hitting with .438 and .397 averages respectively. The Citadel counters with three of the top five pitchers in the conference with 2.49, 2.60 and 2.76 ERA's (Earned Run Averages). Western leads the Southern Conference in team hitting with a .337 average and the Citadel is third batting .279. Western opened up the bottom of the fifth with a hit by Dwayne Bradley, who advanced to third on a right field hit by Mike Manacci. That was as far as it went for WCU as the third Catamount batter flied out to left field to end the inning. USC-Aiken picked up another run in the sixth after a center field double and right field single. Western retired the side on aground out to first, a picked off baserunner, and a ground out to the second baseman-. WCU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth off of three consecutive singles by Rodney Tesh, Kevin Bellomo, and Todd Raleigh. The Cats could not capitalize, however, as Aiken struck out the next batter, and Dwayne Bradley hit into a double play ending the inning. The Pacers sent 12 batters to the plate in the eighth inning, scoring six runs off four hits and no Catamount errors. With two outs in the eighth, Catamount J unior Matt Raleigh hit his eleventh homer of the season, a 380 foot shot to left field. USC-Aiken capped off the ninth inning on an RBI single by catcher Jeff Rubinsak that scored outfielder Mike Bryant. Catamount sophomore Scott Lyman started off the ninth with a 335 foot left field home run, his third of the season. The game ended as three of the last four WCU batters flied out. Western Carolina starting pitcher, senior Mike Thomas (1 -1), was credited with the loss. The start was Thomas' second of the season. His first starting effort resulted in a three-hit shut out of UNC-Asheville last Thursday in Cullowhee. The Cats get a chance at re venge Th ursday, play ing a double header against Aiken before reloading for the weekend's big showdown against 14-1 Citadel.
