  • Sports The Western Carolinian Page 10 Monday. March 26. 1990 Bob Setzer: Athletic budget cut to the bone Ria Stewart Contributing Writer As most college students can attest, money does not grow on trees. If one wants to re-affirm that truth, just talk to athletic director Bob Setzer about Western's athletic budget. "We've never had one of the larger athletic budgets in the Southern Conference, but our ability to get by," says Setzer, "has always been a source of pride." It takes money. Western's athletic budget has always been lean, but in the past few years, it has been cut to the bone, says Setzer. While the lack of revenue due to location, population and student enrollment has traditionally been a thorn in the side of the Catamount athletic program, the coaching instability in the revenue sports of football and men's basketball—as of thisyear, baseball also has become a revenue sport— has plunged those two programs into a cycle of losing teams and dwindling revenue for the rest of the athletic department, says Setzer. Without revenue from football and men's basketball, Western cannot afford to recruit and fund scholarships for all the rest of it's NCAA team sports, he says. Western's athletic recruiting budget for last year, for example, was $ 13,500 as opposed to the Southern Confer- Cullozuhee Cafe Establidbed /948 J (Best Ifiomecooiced food in Jascfeon County Daily Dinner Specials Featuring Seafood, Steaks, Sandwiches, Salads Sidz Monday thru Friday 7am-8pm Saturdays 8am-2pm Drive thru Available During All Operating Hours ull Menu Featuring Steaks-Chicken-Italian Food Salads - Appetizers Open Wednesday thru Monday 5pm until 10pm Brownbagging Permitted With ID Delivery On and Off Campus Call293-3334 Manager- David Ashe Owned and Operated by Cuttoiuhit Cafe ence average of $44,970. The NCAA allows colleges 15 basketball scholarships. Western, however, funds 13. In football, I-AA teams are allowed 70 scholarships. The Cats, on the other hand, can afford only to offer 38. Such paltry financial figures are the reason Western plays "money games," seemingly impossible football contests against I-A football schools as Clemson and N.C. State. These games provide approximately $300,000 per year as opposed to the $26,000 per year for an entire season of men's basketball. "We don't like to play two I-A football teams a season; we'd rather play one, but it's a financial necessity," says Setzer. The instability of the revenue sports has made the revenue sports recruits whom Western attracts hesitant to commit because they do not know if the same coach will be around four years later. One plus that Western does have is its facilities. "Our facilities are as good as anyone's in the Southern Conference," says Setzer. Furthermore, Western is a member of one of the top conferences, academically and athletically in the I-AA division, according to Setzer. Another surprising plus for re cruiting is the "money games" that Western plays in football. 'The players enjoy the opportunity to suit up and play in front of huge crowds that might include friends and relatives," says Setzer. While at the present things look discouraging from a money stand point, Setzer sees improvement in the future. "This is a growing university and eventually, the athletic department will grow with it. Before we Ciin do any of that, however, we must have stability in the revenue sports. Once that occurs everything else w ill fall into place," he says.
