  • Tah-tah: have a nice summer The Voice of the Students VOL. XLI No, 8 THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1975 WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA Two drown in car wreck "I live not in myself but I become a portion of that around me; and to me mountains are a feeling, and the hum of human cities tor™ ture..." BYRON, (Photo by Steve Cook), by A, E, Brown, Jr0 At 2:30 p,m, Sunday, August 3, an unidentified fisher~ man, fishing the Tuckaseegee three miles south of Sylva at the Locust Creek Intersection with Highway 107, discovered the bodies of James Richard Roberts, 19, and Charles Fred Reese, 18, both of Sylva, in the river, Roberts, apparently the driver, was found in the backseat of his 1967 Mercury, while Reese was fifty feet a- State Trooper Bob Allen handled the case for the Highway Patrol. According to Allen, the Mercury was traveling North at 11:00 p.m. Friday, August 1 at an extremely high rate of speed. Then, evidenced Injury in three-level fall by A. E, Brown, Jr. At approximately 10:52 am Thursday, July 31, Calvin Pain fell from the third story of Cope Creek Enterprises' steel skeleton of the planned research addition to Stillwell Sciences Building. Pain was walking on a girder, made slippery from the previous night's rain, near the central part of the structure when he slipped and caught himself with his arms. It was then that eyewit- This week the Western Carolinian was planning to put out an eight page special to commemorate Women's Equality Day, part of International Women's Year (1975). Due to circumstances beyond our control, our beloved Friden typesetting equipment, our IBM selectric, and our good ole' manual Royal all seemed to tire out on the same day, prohibiting an 8 page issue. We urge everyone to participate in Women's Equality Day, August 26. The Women's Issue is promised for the beginning of Fall Quarter. This is the last issue of the summer. Good luck on finals and have a dandy vacation. nesses Carol Riser, Elsie Beaver, and B, J, Lowery noticed a hard-hatted man dangling from a third story girder while seated in their class in Still- well 236, and another hard-hat fifty-year old Enterprises foreman Buddy Stillwell, i crumbling up one of the beams incredibly quickly to try to prevent the fall, Pain, in his attempts to throw his legs over the girder, lost his balance and fell before his father-in-law- could reach the second leveL Pain fell feet first until he hit a girder on the first level with his arm, leg, and chest, flipped over forward, and landed on the moist clay face-down. Letters to the Editor must be signed in order to appear in print. Anonymity may be requested, however, the letters must be signed in order to be printed. The editor reserves the right to edit any letters. While it is not Carolinian policy to refuse to print letters, those considered to be blatant lies or in poor taste may be omitted. Dr, John J, Chapman, professor of geology, teaching in Stillwell 236, contacted the Campus Emergency Rescue Squad, and an ambulance was rushed to the scene. The squad applied emergency first-aid care, placing the conscious Pain's arms in splints and trying to decide how to move him onto a stretcher, Pain was then taken to C, J. Harris Community Hospital in Sylva where A, Moody's Funeral Home ambulance picked him up between 12:00 and 12:30 p,m. to deliver him to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. At Memorial Mission, Pain was treated for multiple breaks in his arms, two dislocated elbows, an eight inch long, three inch wide, and one and one half inch deep gash in his leg, and several bruises. The hospital lists him as being in "satisfactory" condition. At the hospital, Pain's wife, daughter of Buddy Stillwell, said that her husband was "mentally healthy," and considered himself lucky. Had the veteran construction worker of three years fallen a few feet to his left, his fall would not have been broken by the first stor- y girder, and he could have either landed on a hard cement Strip or been impaled on iron reinforcing rods anchored in the concrete, Calvin Pain had but one comment to make from his hospital bed: alive," "Thank Clod I'm by residents of the area saying that they heard tires squealling at the time, and the 200 foot long skid marks, Allen said that Roberts lost control, went off the road, hit a tree, and pro~ ceeded to land finally in the river, He reported that there were no apparent signs of al~ cohol in the car, Dr, James K, Oliver was the medical examiner on call at C, J. Harris Community Hospital when the bodies of Roberts and Reese were brought in. Although his report has not been officially filed with the state, Dr, Oliver was able to help confirm the patrolman's report to some extent. According to Oliver, Reese and Roberts both died between 8:30 p,m. Friday and dawn Saturday of severe head injuries (from hitting the tree), and/or drown« ing. He is, however, unable to report on the possibility of alcohol in the young men's blood until next week, when tests will be completed, As this 'is the last issue of the summer, one can witness that the whole staff has gone bananas.
