'<3&4$ THE JUNGLEI ► * 4 i > Juif/e Jim RowtJl Looking at the Fall athletic season means mixed emotions for the Jungle '-like seeing your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your brand new car. You can't be sure whether to smile or frown. Two teams are hustling right along and living up to their pre-season expectations, cross country and soccer. But one, whose pre-season expectations were never really definite, is looking really sick. Catamount football is ill. If you are thinking of sending get-well cards, bear this in mind, the best get-well cards are four aces. The Cats are having serious scoring problems late in the game, Opponents have plastered 41 points on the scoreboard in the final quarter this saason whUe the Cats havj only put uij seven, Seven points in five quarters! There have been other factors, but when you lose a ballgame the biggest factor is that you didn't have enough points to win, Finally, the Catamounts will be at home this week. It has been five long weeks on the road against five tough opponents, Mississippi College has not won a game this season in four tries, but look for them to be tough, But give the Cats one more chance. It's either win this one or take a seat behind a 0-4 team which would make the best the Cats could play for a .500 season. And worse comes to worse, Jimmy Corley, the team's place kicker and second man on the all-time scoring list, said that he heard he was elected Paladin of The Week at Furman this week since he missed two field goals and one extra point kick. And on. The University of Indiana? The University of Alabama? The University of Kentucky? The Air Force Academy? Yes-sir-ree-bobs, Western Carolina has been competing against them, in cross country, WCU long distance runners are 18-8 even after tangling with those guys, Who are those guys gonna pick on next? It's moving toward a biggy of a week for soccer. The WCU squad is currently 3-1 with Appalachian coming up Saturday night under the lights on the poly-terf in Boone. Then comes Toccoa Falls here in CuUowhee. Like boom, boom, boom suddenly there is truth week: Rollins, Erskine, and Clemson. . .aU in a row for show-and-teU-time. Let's hope we are 5-1 by that time so the sparks will fly. Back to the world at large—Wat Hopkins discovered last night that the St Louis Cardinals are not appointed by the Pope nor syntax collected from sinners, In closing, the Jungle wiU tell you what a bar stool is—it is what Davy Crockett occasionally stepped in.
