Gibson sunk the first free throw as the tension in Ramsey Center was deafening. But to the delight of the fans, the second shot bounced around the iron and rolled off harmlessly, thus leaving the contest tied at 69-69. With Goettie gone, ASU quickly went back to an inside attack, and at the 2:25 mark Terry Miller was called for his fifth foul and had to leave. The two teams battled all the way through the first overtime, but App. State looked to have it locked up when Rodney Peel hit a three-point shot with 33 seconds left that put App. ahead 81-78. With 13 seconds left , a Cornelius Mueller jumper closed the gap to 81-80. Western was unable to foul until only one second was left when Donerlson fouled Rodney Peel. Peel hit both ends of a one-and- one to put App. State up 83-80. Robert Hill then made a length- of-the-court pass to Keith Gray who grabbed the ball and shot in the same motion for a 20-footer that hit nothing but net, leaving the game tied at 83-83, forcing a second overtime. Appalachian's Ben Miller scored the Mountaineers' first nine points of the second overtime as App. State took a 92- 88 lead with less than two minutes on the clock. Rodney Peel hit two foul shots at the 40-second mark to put the Mountaineers ahead 94- 88. Keith Gray's three-pointer at the buzzer produced the final margin. WCU's Dave Donerlson led all scorers with 26 points. Gray had 22, Terry Miller 14 and Goettie 11. Gibson led the Apps with 21 points, Peel had 20, Ben Miller 17 and Ronnie Christian and Kemp Phillips finished with 12 each. For WCU coach Dave Possinger it was another close loss that he found difficult to accept. "We gave it our best shot again, but came up short again," he said. "We've had too many like this one." "Their athletic ability really showed in the end," Possinger added. "We had five guards on the floor in the second OT. We couldn't do it against what they had on the floor." The first half set the tone for the closely fought game. Greg O'Connor came off the bench and quickly tied the game 24-24 with a 10-foot bank shot from the middle of the lane and then gave the Cats a 27-24 advantage with a three-point play. Dave Donerlson gave the Cats a five point lead with a pair from the charity stripe but Rodney Peel pulled the Mountaineers to within 29-26 with a jumper. WCU scored its final six points of the half from three- point range - one by Donerlson and one by Keith Gray - as the Cats took a 35-30 lead at halftime. Track (continued from page 12) top track athletes in any conference. Several of our other athletes continued to get better and show promise, and I hope we can keep coming on strong." Williamson further noted the importance of the Clemson meet in his team's preparation for things to come. "This meet showed a lot of improvement over the previous week," he said. "Hopefully, it has put us back on track to do some good things at the Southern Conference Championships. We've now got two weeks to mature a bit more, get some injuries healed up and prepare for the conference meet." This year's Southern Conference Indoor Championships are set for Feb. 17-18 at Johnson City, TN. Following that date, WCU is scheduled to compete on Feb. 25 back at Clemson, SC in the Clemson Qualifying Meet. t ' Become Involved and Support all WCU Athletic Teams Brad Kimzey Photo Maurice Johnson understands the "agony of defeat" CAROLINIAN SPORTS STAFF Larry Gray - Sports Editor &Layout / Design Laura Goff - Writer Frank Lamm - Writer Richard Sumner - Writer —i— RESERVE OFFICERS* TRAINING CORPS "CAMP CHALLENGE GAVE ME THE CONFIDENCE TO SUCCEED.
