In South Carolina and Virginia. Over the 14-week tour, up to 21,000 students and teachers will be presented with a powerful and entertaining performance by two actors of selected scenes from the best-known tragedies and comedies of Shakespeare. Following performances, the actors visit classrooms to discuss with students Shakespeare's use of language. The sixth annual tour Is supported through funding for a fifth year by AT&T. Line-item funding appropriated to NCSF by the North Carolina General Assembly made it possible for The Festival to reduce booking fees for Globeworks bv 10 percent in 1988. The increased affordabllity has allowed up to a dozen additional appearances in the state this year. 'Globeworks is designed to expose high school students to the difference between reading Shakespeare, and experiencing him live, in performance - the purpose for which these plays were originally written," states Louis Rackoff, NCSF's new Artistic Director and the director of Globeworks . "We hope to stimulate students' interest In theater as an important part of the culture of our society, through a positive experience." For Globeworks, Rackoff collaborated with long-time associate Imre Goldstein, Internationally known for playwriting and directing. Goldstein compiled and edited the passages of Shakespeare used in the text, wtiich builds from the opening discussion on the Shakespearean stage and theatre, to the themes of ambition and kingship, and finally love. Goldstein jas written narration into the script to add context and understanding for younger, modern audiences. The 45-minute performance of Globeworks .so titled after Shakespeare's round, open- air theatre, takes place in cafeterias, gymnasiums, and auditoriums in public and private junior and senior high schools, and on several college campuses, as well as in museums, libraries and other public spaces.
