The Western Carolinian Thursday, October 29, 1987 Catamount Football Notes - THE CITADEL OWNS BEST RECORD AGAINST WCU OF ALL SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SCHOOLS - The Citadel's 7-4 record against WCU is the best record compiled against the Catamounts by any Southern Conference school. Since beconming a member of the Southern Conference in 1977, WCU is 3-7 against the Bullgogs. The Catamounts are 2-3 on their home field against The Citadel, and 2-4 in Johnson Hagood Stadium (1-4 as a Southern Conference member). WATERS IS 4-10 VERSUS THE CITADEL-Bob Waters, WCU's head football coach of nineteen seasons, has posted impressive numbers as a coach and earlier as a player at Presbyterian College. However, most of his experiences while coaching and playing against The Citadel have been of=n a negative side of the won-loss ledger. As a coach, he is 4-7 against The Citadel and as a player (1957-59), hie Presbyterian team was 0-3 adn did not score a point against the Bulldogs. ROACH AND ZENDEJAS VYING FOR NCAA I- AA ALL-TIME FIELD GOAL TITLE - wcu's Kirk Roach and Nevada-Reno's Marty Zendejas are in a virtual toe-to-toe battle to see who sets a new NCAA Division l-AA career field gaol record this season. The all-time record is fro l-AA field goal kickers is 70 established by Tony Zendejas of Nevada-Reno in 1983. The current record holder is the older brother of Marty Zendejas. GOing into this week's game, Zendejas has 67 career field goals and Roach has 66. Roach's career totals read 67 of 96 field goals and 86 of 87 conversion kicks. He currently has a streak of 34 consecutive extra point kicks. He had a streak of 52 snapped last season. NOWELL TIES TOLLESON'S pp<~OPD: GOES AFTER SOLE POSSESSION this SATURDAY - Vincent Nowell's pass reception late in the first quarter of last Saturdays game against Georgia Southern marked the 31st consecutive game in which he has cuaght at least one pass and tied the school record. The Athens, Ga., senior now shares the record with Wayne Tolleson (1974-77). who viewed the catch in person last Saturday. Tolleson is the New York Yankees' shortstop, and last Saturday was on hand to receive the schoolsdisntiguished alumni award. Nowellnow has 137 career catches, fifth on the school's all-time list. CATS' ROACH IS TOP SC SCORER Western Carolina kicker Kirk Roach now has 284 career points, best in Southern Conference history. He passed former WCU kicker Dean Biasucci (280) last week with his performance against Georgia Southern. Biasucci now plays for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
