  • The Western Carolinian 15 Thursday, October 2, 1986 We Need You! av Barbara Borders Residence Hall Council is the voice of the residents that live in a given residence hall area. It represents the needs and interests of the residents. RHC confronts problems and issues, as well as providing an opportunity for residents to meet new people, share ideas, learn about new topics, and solve problems with the residence hall. As a member of your Residence Hall Council, you are in a position to influence other people and their lives in a positive way. If you are full of excitement, and new ideas, share them! Don't hesitate to speak out. Involvement in the hall council can be one of the most dynamic learning experiences of your college career. Your actions and decisions help shape the nature of the hall in which you live. Some of the functions of the Residence Hall Council are as follows: 1) Represents the total population of the hall being comprised of representatives, officers, and R.A.'s. 2) Deals with problems and concerns of those residents. 3) Provides social and educational opportunities for the residents. 4) Sends representatives to the Residence Hall Coordinating Council to share opinions and concerns with other area councils. Residence Hall Councils are involved in many activities throughout the year, some of which are listed below: Movies, Ice . cream socials, Fund raisers, Mountain Heritage Day-Children's Area, Homecoming banners & floats, Homecoming Dance, Service Projects, Alcohol Awareness booths at the Great American Escape, Halloween parties, Christmas activities, Representation on university committees, Representation at regional and state residence hall conferences and a lot more! In the past few years these activities, along with many others, have been very successful. So, >n order to have a spectacular year in the residence hall, filled with fun activities, excitement and adventure, we solicit your involvement, input, and ideas. For more information contact your RHC President, floor representative, or any hall staff member. Get involved! Alpha Lamba Delta Honor Society Alpha Lambda Delta isafreshman honor society which recognizes high scholastic achievement during the first year in college. Membership is open to all freshmen who meet the scholastic qualifications. There are over fifty active members in the Western Carolina University chapter. New members will be inducted near the end of fall semester, 1986. Alpha Lambda Delta provides you the opportunity to develop friendships and work with other students who have serious academic interests, joining together to be of service to your university and to your fellow students. Racquetball Challenge by Susan Swetlock The Ramsey Activity Center will open its racquetball courts every Thursday and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 for the Racquetball Challenge Ladder. The placement matches and registration will start October second and third. Any student, faculty, and staff can join at anytime during the year. There is no charge for participants from the university or Ramsey Center. There will be four divisions. Men's A/B, Men's C/D, Women's A/B, and Women's C/D. Awards will be presented to the top players of each division at the end of each month. Racquetball is an easy sport to learn and acquire good skill levels. It is a great cardiovascular work-out that requires hand-eye coordination, agailty, balance, and arm strength. For a 120- pound woman, an hour of racquetball burns up about 495 calories. By playing in the challenge ladder, one will always find someone at their skill level, or better someone who can improve their game. For those who are interested in future tournaments this is a great way to get a lot of practice and training. For others, it's just a lot of fun! From Catastrophe to Nomad: A Look at WCU Literary Magazine by Scott Stalmasek Staff Writer ^^^^^^^^^^_^_^_ In the 1950's Western Carolina University had a magazine published called the Catastrophe. In 1959, the publication of an article in one issue caused such an uproar, that the magazine was stopped. The next year a new magazine was started and has continued to be published to this day. The magazine is called Nomad. Nomad is an art and literary magazine published in the spring. ihe mnnn?inr> features Doetrv. fiction writing, photography, and artwork done by Western Carolina students, and contributors from other areas. Outside contributors are good for Nomad because it helps to get the magazine known outside of the campus area and become nationally recognized. Outside contributers are also good because it puts the students work up against professional writers. This is not to say the Nomad only wants outside contributers. They encourage work from students, and faculty members. The Nomad is funded by the SGA and is run by Western Carolina students. It is published from a joint effort of the English Department and the Art Department. Nomad is advised by Charlotte Holmes and William Paulk of the English Department, and Jon Jicha of the Art Department. If anyone has an interest in art or literature, then Nomad welcomes people to join the staff. The first meeting will be held on October 2, in room 419 of the English building. Other meetings will be held once a month. The Nomad wants students to send in poetry or fiction writing and artwork to be published in the magazine. To send in written work, put it in the box marked Nomad in the English building, but remember you will not get it back. If you do want it back then send it to Nomad c/o English Department W.C.U.. Cullowhee, N.C 28723. All written work must be typed. Artwork is sent to Nomad c/o Art Department W.C.U., Cullowhee, N.C. 28723. Submissions are accepted October 1 through February 1. Western Carolina students who send in submissions are eligible for the Nomad Student Award, in the area of fiction, poetry, and art. The 1987 spring issue of Nomad will be out at the beginning of May. So if you like poetry or fiction writing, get a copy and enjoy some good work.
