PAGE 5 February 13,1986 Happy Valentines Day WESTERN CAROLINIAN Entertainment & Arts "Get Wet!" 1986 is here along with it's new fashion in bathing suits, which look like today's burmuda shorts and T-shirts. Then as time progressed we got skimpier on material. The bikini hit the beach and all was bared. The one piece, though, was still covering up, until now. The look of skimp is in but the body revealing one piece with sexy cut outs is hot. By all means the bikini is still hot, but sexier and leaving a little more to the imagination. The one piece today is higher cut on the thigh to give a longer slimmer looking leg. Cut outs are the key to the ultimate sexy look. Low cut backs, high cut necks, and cut out sides are also very hot. One new look is the deftly cut suit which is similar to a halter top with a severly plunged neck line. Another new look is the ultra- high- cut suit with a wide hip band in contrasting color. Peekaboo is for kids you say? Not for kids without curves. Peekaboo sides are cut outs between the hip and waist, and what an eyecatcher. A lot of one pieces are sexier than ever because they eliminate all but the most body Photo by Ken Lauber by Stephanie Crocitto and Karen Sue Howard Fashion Editors hugging details. As always the bikini is still hot, whether it be strings or bands. The french sillouette of the bikini is still very popular, but some designers made them so stringy that they made them without tops! A new trend with bikinis are bands. A thick rippled band around the bust area with a bottom that bares little. It is the classic french bottom, but instead of strings, a thick band that hugs the hips yet accents the waist. The fabric used for these suits is shiny and eyecatching. Some of these are the leather look-alike, vinal rubber or metallic! Lycra also adds some shine as well as control. Designers are also mixing nylon and spandex to give that constant wet look, and what better way to look on the beach than wet? Yes, bathing suits have come a long way. Women of the 80's are body conscious and must be to wear these body fitting suits. Be a knock out this year on the beach and reveal what you want, where you want. Sexy is hot; cheap is not. Upcoming Plays Two of the nation's premier touring companies -The Indianapolis Ballet Theater and The Texas Opera Theater - will visit Western Carolina in February. Both programs were scheduled for the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center, which has not been completed. Both performances have been moved to Hoey Auditorium. The Indianapolis. Ballet will perform at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for non- WCU students and $1 for WCU students. No senior citizen discount is available for the ballet. The Texas Opera will perform Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for non- WCU students and $2 for WCU students. A20percent senior citizen discount is available. Both programs are sponsored as part of the WCU Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series, a cultural events program underwritten by student fees. The programs are made possible by grant monies from the National Endowment for the Arts through the Southern Arts Federation and the N.C. Arts Council. The Indianapolis Ballet was originally scheduled to do the story ballet "Coppelia," but because of the location change now will perform a mixed repertoire which includes "Prague Waltzes," "Gliere Waltz," "Ritter Pasman Czardas," "Some Late Pieces," "Bodyworks," and Act III of "Coppelia." George Verdak is the artistic director of the professional troupe of 18 youthful dancers. Dace Dindonis is the assistant artistic director. Members of the company are Shawna Akin, Gregory George, Phi Zappa Krappa: A Review by Larry Sparrow "This album contains material which a truly free society would neither fear nor suppress," is boldly proclaimed on the front cover of FrankZappa's new record, "Frank Zappa Meets The Mothers Of Prevention." The warning/guarantee goes on to assure potential buyers that listening to the record will not cause eternal damnation. Although much has changed since the sixties when Country Joe McDonald was routinely arrested for leading crowds in "The Fish Cheer," and Zappa was put in jail for recording allegedly pornographic material, the battle against rock music continues. Zappa is still fighting for his constitutionally guaranteed right to say what he wants to say with his lyrics. Zappa was a witness at the recent senate held record label hearing, popularly known as the "porn rock" hearing. There is a song about the hearing on the new record. Zappa is also preparing a home video on the senate session. Zappa has used recorded statements from the hearings on the song "Porn Wars". Thus, Zappa has put the senators on exactly the type of album they found to be so offensive. Some of the more asinine comments were made by Sen. Fritz Hollins (D-South Carolina) who called rock music, "outrageousfilth," and said, "if I could find some wayconstitutionallyto do away with it, I would." "Porn Wars" is required listening for people who are concerned about censorship. The rest of the album is even more entertaining. "We're Turning Again" is a brilliant satire of the hippies of the sixties, and the dead heroes of that generation (including Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison). "Yo Cats" is a parody of the growing commercialism of jazz music. Side two contains two instrumentals, "Little Beige Sambo", and "Aerobic In Bondage", which were performed by Zappa on the synclavier guitar synthesizer. They show some of the finest and most innovative use of the relatively new instrument that I have yet to hear. I have throughly enjoyed my copy of "Frank Zappa Meets The Mother Of Prevention", and recommend it highly. Kathryn Stephenson is the executive director. One of the dancers, Dale Shields, trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem before joining the professional troupe. Sheilds also trained at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York and graduated from Butler University. The Texas Opera Theater will stage "Die Fledermaus," Johann Strauss' tribute to frivolity. The operetta is sung entirely in English and is a musical portrayal of one of 19th century Europe's wildest parties and merry mix-ups. First performed in Vienna on April 5, 1874, "Die Fledermaus" is heralded as Strauss' most successful and widely loved operetta. Dorothy Danner will direct the production at WCU. Michael Pisani will conduct, and sets will be by Maxine Willi Klein. Danner's credits include "The Merry Widow" for the Houston Grand Opera, "Hansel and Gretel" with the Syracuse Opera, the Minnesota Opera's "Kiss Me Kate" and five productions with Chautauqua Opera in New York. Cast announcements are made just prior to the performance but the company, based in Houston, features some of America's most promising young opera singers. Seating in Hoey Auditorium is limited.
