  • 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN November 12.1970 The Cats AND THE JUNGLE ty jiuujk jm umell. It is impossible. It cannot be done. There just aint S^TSX* d tf y0Ul don't brieve it just look at the SCOREBOARD. Western Carolina's fall athletic teams could hint lie and rest the remainder of this faU season and still have a winning record. That is a Hact and it cannot change unlets my math is wrong. Let's sec.we have won 39 and lost only 11— now, uh, then we have only four more regular season contests left: two varsity footbaU, one cross-country, and one freshman footbaU... and just you add four to the lost cloumn if we lost them aU... and uh you get 15, Now 15 is smaller than 39 (aint it?) so's we must be winners, right? You dont suppose we could participate and lost 25 post-season contests do you? Good. Then it aint possible. We could win mem aU and be 43-11, but I aint picky. Three out of four wUl do if we cant get four out of four. Would you believe that since last week we (that's me and the Cats) have won six and lost naught, Somebody somewhere has been finding out who lives in Cullowhee the hard way. Tusculum is one. The soccer team zapped them 9-1 and now have their sights set on the Area 5 championship. Through the grapevine, meaning in this case an AshevUle TV sports director, came this comment this week by the Warren WUson soccer coach — "Man for man Erskine is better than Western Carolina. We have played them both. But WCU's coaching must have the edge because as a team they play better and all things considered they are a better team." That is a pat on the back for soccer coach Charles Schrader who in just two years of competition has his team not only in the Area 5 playoffs, but somebody who knows thinks they are better than the number one team in the South. And on we go... This wiU be big week for sports on the WCU campus. Want to see basketball or football this Friday night? The basketball Catamounts will scrimmage at 7:30 and again on Saturday morning about nine against Erskine, Coach Jim Hartbarger's Cats are going to be tough this season and if you want a sneak pre-view be there. Also in CuUowhee Friday night will be the AA Western North Carolina State, high school playoff game between Henderson- ville and Murphy. Coming up soon wUl be the Elon Turkey Classic at Burlington sponsored by the Burlington Civitan Club. This is a well-organized tournament and the Hartbarger basketball Cats wUl be in it On Friday, Nov. 28, the Catamounts wUl open their season and the Classics against Atlantic Christian College. Game time wUl be seven o'clock and Elon wUl battle Lenoir-Rhyne in the nightcap. The winners of these contests will battle for the championship on Saturday night Nov. 29. Tickets for that battle wUl be available at the Athletic Office. For the football Catamounts, it's a big Saturday coming against the vaunted Concordia Cobbers. Coach Bob Waters and his staff have made it Western N6rth Carolina Blue- Chlpper Day to add even a little more spice to the cake. A high school blue-Chipper is an outstanding athlete recognized and desired by many colleges and universities. Among the Blue-Chippers to be present are: Jim Lyda, Dwight Plemmons, David Rathburn of AshevUle High, Charlie Brown, Steve Limbo, Steve MUner, Mike Free of Pisgah High; Dennis SUvers, Dean Clark, Bruce Arrowood of North Buncombe High; Gary Cowan, Jim Davis of Sylva-Webster High; Frank Tate, Wade Frye of Ashebrook High; diaries "Eagle" Moss, Gary Nelson.Charl.ie Carr of Brevard High; Mike Holder, Robbie Kirkpatrick of Tuscola High; Larry Beck of Swain High; Marcus Mauney of Shelby High; Greg Whiteside of Skyland High; Brad Goree of Marion High; Gaylord BraUey of Shelby High; Mark Manuel of RobbinsvUle High; Terry StUes of Murphy; and Phil Deitz of Hendersonville High, Better give these fine athletes a hero's welcome so they*U see how we support the Cats and Cats-to-be. They can make WCU a mucho goodo team in years to come and that you can bet your movie money on, If I dont see you before Easter go ahead and hide the eggs. SEVEN DAYS A WEEK Cats vs. Concordia at last Concordia CoUege of Minnesota brings its six game win streak down South this weekend for a delayed test against Western Carolina University. Concordia, a perennial small college power, and Western's Catamounts were scheduled to meet last season in the NAIA Championship playqfTs. How-' ever, Western was caught looking ahead a week and lost its final regular season game to Presbyterian and lost a bid for the playoffs as weU as a perfect season. Concordia, 10-1 last year, went on to the championship finals where they lost to Texas A & I. Both teams had early season offensive problems and were disappointing in their first three games. Concordia found the answers to its problems in quarterback Dale Hertel, receiver Laurie Anderson, and running backs Kent Baldry and Avery Seifert as they rolled up points and victories after the third game. Their last six foes have faUen giving the Cobbers an overaU mark of 7-1-L The latest Concordia win was a 13-0 shutout of Gustavus, the NAIA's sixth ranked team going into last Saturday's game. A season ending victory over WCU would assure the Minnesotans of a top ten position. Western Carolina has a winning streak going also. After losing three of their first four, the Cats have rallied for three straight wins and will bring a 4-3 record into toe intersec- tlonal clash. Hal Mote's passing, the running of taUback Otis Mcintosh and a steady defensive effort has been the winning formula for the Catamounts. Mcintosh, only a junior, needs 100 yards rushing in each of WCU's remaining two games to break the season rushing record and one more touchdown to tie the career TD mark. Other than both teams getting off to slow starts and then coming on strong, the teams are similar in other ways as well. Both are strong defensively and on offense, are conservative passing teams. Also, Concordia's coach Jim Christopher son and Western's Bob Waters played against each other in the NFL ~ Christopherson was a Minnesota Viking and Waters, a San Francisco 49'er.
