  • 7 Western Carolinian/March 8,1984 Ride Board Providing Spring Break Wheels Heather Frey Staff Writer Spring Break is only a few weeks awav and manv WCU students are seriously considering a vacation at the beach. Is getting there a problem'Then call WWCU S>l FM's Ride Board. The Ride Board has been on the air tor approximately five years now. an invention olTormerQI FM disc jockey .lac Kilgoe. According to Chris law. present voice of the ride board.the show has another wa) lor the radio station tostav involved with the campus and offer a really convenient service. "We saw there was something else we could pick up on: rides . . One person could call up one tunc and say. 'Yea. I need a ride to Raleigh.' and they've got it announced . . . Maybe a thousand people are listening. Rather than put out a thousand fliers and hope you catch all those people, vou can catch them all in one sentence." he said. I he Ride Board is especially convenient lor those in need of Spring Break transportation. As law explained. "When you're going all the way to llorida. that's a prcttv expensive trip when you've got two people in thc car Whereas, when you've got lour. . . The reasoning behind it was everybody can probably get a ride, but this way thev can get a ride a lot cheaper. Let somebody else do the driving-split thc driving lour ways. .. That would be the biggest advantage, vou can carpool and you can get to know some people." It's hard to gauge the actual success ol thc Ride- Board, but its busiest times are Christmas and Spring breaks. At these times it takes three to lour minutes to read over the names. Normally there are onlv fifteen to twenty names, which take up close to a minute of air time. But is there a good return response? law is not sure, but wishes he could be. "People seem to get calls. In fact, if somebody's offering a ride they usually have a call up and say. 'lake my name off! I'm tired ol answering the phone. I've got a carload.' Other than that, it's hard to tell." he said. To get your messsage on the Ride Board is simple. Ihe radio station is open nineteen hours a day and twenty-four on the weekend. A student can call up any time and only has to leave his name, destination, when he wants to leave, whether he needs a ride or riders, and a phone number. Intheearlierdaysof the Ride Board there- used to be two classifications: will share expenses and won't. Now it's just assumed no one is being very generous about expenses, considering gas prices, and all the rides are lumped together. However, if the Spring Break Ride Board starts getting too lengthy Faw said there is a possibility he'll divide trips by location. For .example, he'll mention rides to Florida first, then rides to North Carolina, etc. As of last Friday there were three pages of names with more- ex pected. What kind of people can a student expect to betiding with? filings, so far. have been going smoothly, but Faw admitted he's a bit" apprehensive about the possibility ol people getting hooked up with "weirdos!" It does happen; he knows from personal experience. "I was taking somebody home one time." he explained. "And they kept reaching over and turning down the radio! I'mdrivingand they reach over in my car and they keep turning down my radio, and talking, too. right in my ear." he said. Make Spring Break unforgettable next week in sunny Fort Lauderdale. Chris Faw WWCU Ihe Ride Board offers some great advantages on carpooling. meeting new people and cutting costly expenses. Give it a try! Some lasting friendships may come out of it. Budget From Page 1 Fort Lauderdale: Where The Action Is shooting for the beginning of April to present the finished budget, but that is still tentative. Mike Robinson asked me to tell everyone that the SGA is open for suggestions and if anyone has anything to say or ask about this budget, they should contact him in the SGA offices on the second floor of the U.C. Kristen Davis Staff Writer OP. lettering everywhere you turn, thousands ol tanned bodies stuffed into bikinis and shorts, belly-flop contests, nightlife, and much, much more: this is just a small taste of what can be found on the sunny beaches of Ft. Lauderdale over spring break. The one and a half mile stretch of beach commonly referred to as "the Strip", is where many feel spring break happens. For eight weeks, the city of Ft. Lauderdale literally revolves around the 120.(X)0 college students that will hit the town for sun. surf, sights, nightlife, and just plain old fun. During the day. the beach is where the action is. as well as various clubs along the strip. Ihe world famous "Button" is thc home of the infamous wet-T-shirt contests, and on March 13th will host WCU day. The "Candy Store" is a club where most of the action revolves around the outdoor swimming pool, and the fun includes the "spring Olympics" with everything from teenie-weenie bikini, home-made bikini, to belly-flop contests. Clubs along the strip compete for the crowds, thus prizes for the various contests range from a dinner lor two. to $100 cash. The daylight hours are also filled with various booths along the beach sponsored by the different beer distributors who hand out posters, visors, beach towels, and other items to passers-by. Whether rain or shine, there are plenty of activities to fill one's day and gear one- up for the nightlife. Nightly entertainment can be found on the strip, or extending throughout the city. "Penrod's,"the setting for many scenes from the movie "Spring Break" is a popular spot for students, with its disco and rock bands, plus three rooms lor dancing. Venturing further into the city. "Gralitti."and "City Limits." to name a lew. can be found to be exciting with various shows and dance contests. All this seems to add up to big bucks. The current on season rates appear to be as follows: no cover charges dm ing thc day at the clubs, with drinks ranging from 75 cents on up to S2.75. Hotel rooms run approximately S60.00 a night and up. At night cover charges vary. with some clubs having no cover charge and some having up to $10.(X) cover. A car is not really necessary if residing on the beach, but suggested if venturing off the strip. The weather is usually quite predictable with temperatures reaching a high of K5 during the day with a low at night hitting around 70 degrees. Summer clothing is appropriate with a light sweater suggested for evenings. Whether looking lor rest and relaxation, or lun and excitement, ft. Lauderdale can suit all your needs! Rifle From Page 5 own practice range, managed to beat us by 3 points with a score of 2017. Presbyterian College shot a 180 point improvement with a score of 2035. This was a huge improvement over their last match since we beat them over three weeks ago. The Citadel scored 2145. 1 am glad that thc season is finally over, but we were so close and yet so far from a huge victory. Afterward, every bad emotion in us came out, but the WCU Rifle Team will ve back next year; ready be blow our competition away.
