Meet in front of the Intramural Office 13, Reid Gym in lobby area* Starting Safety Football Team Will Sullivan Stuff Reporter Senior strong safety Herb Streater was dismissed from the football team last Thursday for undisclosed academic reasons. Sophomore Jeff Rogers will start in his place on Saturday. Streater, from Greensboro, was a three-year letterman and a two-year starter for the Cats. Head Coach Steve Hodgin could not comment on the specific reason for the dismissal, but said that Streater will be on the sidelines for Western's remaining games against App. State this Saturday and East Tennessee State on Nov. 19. "We're going to miss him on the field," Hodgin said. "He's meant a lot to us." Streater had accounted for three fumble recoveries, seven pass breakups, three tackles for losses, and two interceptions through Western's first nine games. He was a conference and national defensive player of the week following his performance against Georgia Southern on Ocotober 8, as he returned two fumbles for 84 yards and intercepted a pass. Streater is the third Catamount player to be dismissed from the team this year. Linebackers Shawn McNeill and Anthony Quinn were thrown off on August 29 after they were charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Notes: Starting senior fullback Marcus Roberts will not play Saturday because of a knee injury. He could return for the East Tennessee State game next week. Senior Tommy Smith, a starting offensive tackle, is questionable for the App. State game. He sustained an ankle injury at VMI on Ocotber 29. Cats Club Football Beats App's Club 27-0 Chris Burton Staff Reporter First place was on the line Sunday when WCU Club Football played Appalachian's Club. App gave Western their only loss back in September by a score of 22-6. Western totally dominated the first half holding on to win 27-0. "We lost last time but we have really pulled together as a team and are now in first place. Our running game really dommated thanks to the offensive line: Brian Powell, Matt Williams, Barry Glass, Tim Carberry, Rock, Joe Bowman and Mark Geeter," said Head Coach Mike Winchester. Appalachian, who was unbeaten in conference play this year, received the opening kick. Western's defense iirr lediately showed App. that this game was not going to be a repeat, by forcing them to a three and out situation. Western's first drive also went three and out. Appalachian took possession on their own 27 yard line. On third down Tony Gunn intercepted the pass giving Western back the ball. After a series of downs, App. took over again, on second down Charles Jenkins recovered a fumble setting WCU up for their first score, a one yard plunge for Julius Grant for the score, the extra point was good giving the Cats a 7-0 lead. Western's second scoring was an example of smash mouth football. WCU took over on their own 34 yard Sport Management Student Professional Assoc. Meeting: November 13, 7:00pm Breese Gym Everyone is invited to attend! Free Food, Drinks, Basketball and Fun. Contact Scott at 293-3857 line. On third and one, Jeremy Lunsford crashed through the line on a five yard run keeping the drive alive. From the App 38 Travis Stephenson found Dewight Winchester for a 35 yard pass play giving WCU a first and goal from the 3. Stephenson then scored on a three yard run. The extra point was good giving the cats a 14-0 lead. Western scored again with two minutes left in the half when Grant went in for his second touchdown. On first down Tony Gunn picked off his second pass of the game, returning it to the 3 yard line. On the next play fullback Mike Cheeks went in for the score giving the Cats a 27-0 lead. Appalachian then went to the air only to be intercepted by Aggrester Bell ending the fist half. On the last play of the game Bell picked off his second pass, sealing the win and placing the Cats on top of the conference. Western's last two wins were over ECU (33-0) and Duke (34-8). "The kicking game was great putting us in good field position and Julius played another great game," said Coach Winchester. Western will play next Sunday in Raleigh against N.C. State to end the regular season. The Cats Club was forced to forfeit on their last meeting with the Pack because the officials failed to show. They will probably play their first playoff game here at home if all goes well with State. r MOUNTAIN SKATE CENTER'S O, ROLLER HOCKEY MONDAY NIGHT'S 8:00 pm till 11:00 pm COST: $3.00 Goalies Play Free (704)456-4441 or 1-800-458-4144 Ask for Brett League Play Starting Soon.
