Kennedy Center's 19th American College Theater Festival (ACTF). The play was one of six chosen by the selection committee of the ACTF for their "high standards of excellence" from entries by more than 70 colleges and universities in \ 0 states in the Southeast. A favorable nod at the regional level will mean that the entire cast, crew, and set will travel to the nation's capital in March to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The regional festival will be held at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Feb. 17-21. "The Foreigner" is a comedy by the late Larry Shue about a visitor to north Georgia who doesn't speak English but gets entangled with the knights of the Klu Klux Klan. The WCU production, directed by Stephen Ayers of the speech and theatre arts department, was sold out for eight performances in November. Adjudicators who saw the production then recommended it to the selection committee of the ACTF. The adjucators were Thomas Jones, professor at the University of South Carolina-Coastal Carolina, and Robin R. Farquhar, managing director of the Flat Rock Playhouse. "We think the main reason the production was so well received is that all the elements of good theatre are there," said Ayers. "It's a funny play, but there are moments that are deeply thought- provoking. The performances are well designed and finelyexecuted. It's a show that richly deserves the spontaneous applause and standing ovation that come at the curtain." Dr. Donald L. Loeffler, head of the department of speech and theatre arts, said, " To be selected for the regional festival is a definite honor for us, proving that our efforts to bring quality theatre to the region are worthwhile." Other institutions competing in Knoxville will be Auburn University with "Angel Street," Virginia Tech with "Fed." North Carolina A&T with "Eden," Birmingham (Ala.)-Southern with "Sand Mountain," and Gainesville (Ga) Junior College with "The Heir Transparent." Cast members of "The Foreigner" are Mark Warwick of Lumberton; Terry Nienhuis of Cullowhee; Patrick Williamson of Richmond, Va.; Philip Auton of Lenoir; Phoebe Hall and June Cagle of Sytva, and Gregg Jones of High Point. The set was designed by Richard S. Beam of the speech and theatre arts faculty. A benefit performance of "The Foreigner" will be held Feb. 14 in Hoey Auditorium on campus.
