  • Editorial 3 April i, 1982/ Western Carolinian Election time has rolled around and once again it is time to remind the students to get out and vote. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how important this time of year is, this editorial is for you. lt pays to become involved in the political process that helps determine how this school is run and how your student lees are spent. Traditionally, this process has been controlled by the campus fraternities, and the power of this control lies in the fact that the fraternities consistently get out and vote. I his is not a bad reflection of the fraternities on campus; it is a bad reflection on the "independents" ol this campus. Many of those who howl the loudest about fraternity control of SGA are the ones who do not vote. Yet many of those same complainers will not vote this time either, and use that tired old excuse, "the fraternities always elect everyone." It simply doesn't have to be that was this >ear; there are a total of six candidates for the two offices open, and they are ottering a \ariety of interesting and refreshing platforms. All you have to do is lamiliari/e yourself with the candidates (which should be fairly easv since there are posters all over this newspaper and this campus) and go vote next Wednesday. It'-- as simple as that Bv voting in the election, vou have done no worse t liana t least earn the right to complain Carolinian Endorses Brown, Bonne I I I he Carolinian gets involved in politics only as much as it has to, and once again that time has also come. The Carolinian endorses candidates for the offices of SGA President and Vice-President. We have looked over all the candidates and have consulted the political analysts we have on our stall. Alter consulting with our editorial board, we have arrived upon an agreement lor this year's picks, lt was very difficult this year. as there are a good group of candidates and a lot of good ideas have been presented to me and my staff by them. This year the Carolinian is endorsing Blake Brown for SGA President and Charles Bonnell foi Vice-President. Although these candidates are not running on the same platform, we at the Carolinian feel that this would be the best combination of candidates to get the most accomplished next year. Blake Brown garnered this honor by the vast background of experience he brings into his campaign. Brown has served as the Director of Legal Assistance, Presidential Assistant, sat on manv campus-wide committees and is a member of the Student Marshall Club. He is known around campus for his spirit of cooperation and his proposed "Open-Door Policy" (where StiA would be more available to the students for complaints) helps to prove that spirit. Charles Bonnell also brings this spirit into his campaign. His experience in RHCC on local, state and national levels has proved that he is also a Worth) administrator. With increased cooperation between the major student organi/ations (Western Carolinian, SGA, WWCU) the administration will be more receptive to student needs in the future. We at the Carolinian believe that a Brown Bonnell platform would help serve this end . and the needs of the students best. v$ ft i\A *' -_ Cp P ,:: ; r *?*%g® The Medical Record Administration Program made history recently when 15 students received their Lab Coats and Arm Patches designating them as student medical record administrators - Western Carolina University - preparatory to their clinical experience in area hospitals. Common Sense by Larry Hardin When I see Democrats and Republicans overlooking their differences, when I see a fraternity out collecting funds. 1 have to say hats off to all of you. 1 am speaking about the effort to save the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that is going on in this state. So often we are inclined to only speak out when we see the wrong, or the folly of some fools. The inverse of this also holds true, we seldom speak out w hen something good is going on. I believe this is also true of our interpersonal relationships as well as our larger social relationships. On the national level media. TV and newspapers in particular, much news is not reported because it is not entertaining (wrong, foolish, or sensational'.'??) enough for the audience. This is what they tell us at any rate. What this is saying is that it is much more likely that violence, terrorism, massacres, riots, and such events will be in the headlines as opposed to people doing goood things, or people working out their problems without violence. The mass media says this is how we want to be entertained, what wc want to see and hear, it is the mind set we have as Americans. It is for this reason when 1 see political parties overlook each other's wrongs and differences I am ama/ed. Yes. it is amazing to see political differences set aside and something done in co-operation for a change. It is for this reason when I see a fraternity get out and attempt to save a lighthouse at the other end of this state I ,am impressed and feel something needs to be said. 1 know saving an old lighthouse simply because it is an old lighthouse may seem unimportant to many people: however, this old lighthouse is a historic landmark, it is part of our culture, a part of our heritage. I oo much of our past is given up to make room for the future. We are really still a young nation and I believe we must start looking to preserve those parts of our past that still exist. What saving one old lighthouse represents is that people are doing something to save a part of our past that is worthy of being saved. It represents people overlooking differences and getting off their duffs and doing something good. What I am seeing is a truly worthy cause (in my opinion) being taken up by opposing members of our government (one of whom I do not even care for). I am also seeing a campus organization using its collectivity to promote something that has value to all of us. What I am also seeing is that this effort was about to slide by and receive no notice, appreciation, or someone to say. "Hey! Someone is doing something right for a change." .lim. Jesse, and all you brothers in the Theta Xi, thanks for your time and efforts, thanks for your concern for one old lighthouse that needs to be saved. PS. If you missed helping save the Cape Hatteras 1 ighthouse with your donation I am quite sure I heta Xi would be more than happy to accept your donation a little late.
