  • February 4, 1982/ 8 Young, Laster Voted Players Of The Week <s Kevin Young photo by Rick McDaniel by Russ Randolph Players selected as this week's Carolinian Player of the Week for basketball are as follows: In men's basketball, due to the recent superb play by the Cats, it was a very difficult task when trying to select only one player. However, as the nominations rolled in from coaches, students, and faculty members on Tuesday, it became a unanamous choice for Catamount KEVIN YOUNG. This 6'2" Senior from Hendersonville had an excellent week last week and at Campbell Monday night, and has accumulated a 3-game total of 19 points, 7 assists, and 9 rebounds. Kevin's best game was at Campbell, where he had 14 points. (6 of 8 from the floor) 2 of 2 from the free throw line, I assist, and 3 rebounds. He now holds a 57.79E shooting record from the foul line, has a 6.9 scoring average, and leads the Cats in steals with 41. "Kevin is really coming around as an all-around performer for us," said Catamount Coach Steve Cottrell of Kevin's recent play. "He's our floor coach, fast break man, and spirit booster when the team is down." Cottrell added, "and he has what it takes to be a leader." As the selection for the Lady Cats, it was newcomer TAMMY LASTER who was chosen to represent her team. Tammy transferred to Western from N.C. State, where she also played basketball, and she only became eligible to play here in December. However, since then, she's been a real spark to the team, and lady Cat Coach Judy Stroud says she looks for many exciting things to come from this 5'8" Sophomore. Tammy is a super person to coach." said Stroud of the Weaverville native. "She got her first start against Appalachian, and she's played consistently since then. We're looking for many good things to come from her as our season winds down," Stroud said. Perhaps the most outstanding statistic in regard to Tammy's recent play came Monday night when she hit a record-setting 10 of 10 (100%) from the foul line against Gardner Webb. Also in that game, which the Lady's won 85-73, Tammy had a team-high 20 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds to pace the Lady Cats in the win. In her last three games against Appalachian, UNC-A, and Gardner Webb, Tammy accumulated an impressive total of 40 points, 3 assists, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. "I'm real honored to receive this award," said Tammy upon notification that she was this week's player of the week. "I just hope I can contribute as much as 1 can these last tew weeks to help our team end our season in style," she said. Indeed, both Tammy's and Kevin's play has been stylish lately, and we feel sure they will be winning factors to both their teams as their seasons draw toa close. In recognition to being selected player of the week, written certificates will be sent to each player for their keeping. The Catamounts will meet Clemson's Tigers for a second time September 25 in Clemson's Memorial Stadium, more commonly known as Death Valley. The schools met for the first time on the football field in 1980 when Clemson struggled to a 17-10 win. Western Carolina and Wake Forest will play for the first time in season opener, September 4, in Winston- Salem. The Catamounts will meet six fellow Southern Conference schools: East Tennessee State (Oct. 2); Furman (Oct. 9); Marshall (Oct. 16); UT-Chattanooga (Oct. 30); The Citadel (Nov. 6); and Appalachian State (Nov. 20). VMI will not appear on WCU's conference schedule again until the 1984 season. In addition to Clemson and Wake Forest. Western's non-conference games will be with Tennessee Tech (Sept. II); Mars Hill (Sept. 18); and Wofford (Oct. 23). Western Carolina and Mars Hill, located approximately 75 miles apart in the mountains of western North Carolina, will renew a rivalry that dates back to 1931. The schools have not met on the gridiron since the 1967 conference. "This is the most attractive and most difficult schedule weVe ever played," said Bob Waters, WCU's athletic director and head football coach. "And," he added, "we will play the toughest schedule among Southern Conference schools for the second straight season. "We are excited about this schedule for several reasons," continued Waters. "We are playing two ACC teams and all of our games will be played within three and one-half hours of our campus." Concerning the meeting with Clemson, the unbeaten defending national champions and Orange Bowl winner, Waters labeled the game "a challenge" in the understatement of the year. Waters said the game with Mars Hill is expected to create a lot of interest in the western part of the state. "This game will have a lot of local appeal," he noted. The Catamounts won four of their last five games in 1981 to finish 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Conference. The complete schedule is as follows: Sept. 4 - at Wake Forest (N); Sept. 11 - Tennessee Tech (N); Sept. 18 - Mars Hill (N); Sept. 25 - at Clemson (D).
