  • January 28, 1982/ a SGA Inducts New Members, Takes Up Ticket Issue by Leah Geanopolos Western Carolina University's Student Senate began their first session of Spring 1982 in the same sedate tone of its final meetingfor 1981. This tone was not. however, to be held as a new issue was brought before senators on January 25. Senate Resolution ^939 concerning the appointments of six students to the Student Judiciary for the 1981-82 academic vear was brought to the floor and passed. New members of the Supreme Court are : BillHooker. John Ever hart, Jane Watson, Bruce Moor. Keith Cor/me. and Steve Cloud. Second at hand was the immediate problem of three vacancies left by senators who have resigned since fall session. One of the spaces was filled by Bruce Piercy. a runner up in the last election, sworn in by Senate President lee Cheek. Because of the student outcry against the admissions rationing system to home basketball games currently in effect, a resolution (#94!) was drawn up by Student Government President Gary long and Vice- President lee Cheek. It states that the policv of admissions on the basis of the first letter of the students' last names "has caused immediate and continuous student dissatisfaction," that it "will in the long run actually prohibit the individuals opportunity to attend any given game." The resolution also cites policv as having been "loosened" in the two examples of its use to date. An alternative which will meet the requirements ot the administration and will also be more satisfactory to the students is the first come- first serve policv alreadv partially in use. The SCiA strongly suggests that his plan be completely adopted since some kind of restriction is necessary and this they feel is the most reasonable compromise. Also brought to light at the Senate session was the concern that the administration's decision was negotiated and implemented without notification of anvone in the Student Government Association. Thev were not informed, according to SGA members, at anv stage in the decision-making process, lt was also mentioned during positive debate for the bill that it is our right as students to be offered "a full program of intercollegiate sports." Once the resolution Peace Corps Helping to Improve Life Around World by Toni Saddler "Ihe Peace Corps-it's the toughest job you'll ever love." The Peace Corps uses this slogan to describe the type ot experience that over 5700 . people from ages 18 up are undergoing in Africa, Latin America, the Micronesian and Pacific Islands, and manv other places around the world. According to Tom OToole. professor of history and former Peace Corps volunteer, this description fits the experience. Peace Corps volunteers are working in jobs ranging from auto mechanical to educational in over 60 countries. The Peace Corps accepts men and women with degrees in SUCh fields as liberal arts, social work or home economics and people without degrees who have experience in farming, construction, handicrafts, home management, auto mechanics, forestry, business, and other areas. While the type of background needed by host countries varies, the Peace Corps always requires a desire to serve others and a willingness to spend two years in a difficult environment helping people to help themselves. Volunteers are warned that hours are long, frustrations are many, and successes come in small doses. Vet over 90 percent of former volunteers said thev would be glad to volunteer again. One volunteer said. "It's eye- opening; heart-opening; thought-opening." Savs OToole who is also a member of the national Council of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. "Ihe two most exciting years of my life were my Peace Corps years." OToole savs that the Corps has a tremendous impact on a volunteer because of the intensity of a volunteer's assignment and the age at which most people volunteer. He says that sometimes the impact is so great that volunteers take years to completely re-adjust to living in the United States. Often volunteers are given a general assignment, but as thev become more active in the host country, thev wind up involved in areas outside of their assignment. One such volunteer is Susan Hancks of Kansas who said. "1 went to teach math, but I ended up teaching as much English as math, and a little social studies, and some chemistry, and 1 also coached boys' basketball." Susan was assigned to an up-country school in Liberia. 250 miles from the capital city of Monrov ia Besides helping to better the lives of the members of the host countries, the Corps also helps to better the communication between the United States and the host countries. OToole savs. "Ihe Peace Corps is the best investment for U.S. security that has ever existed." Having person-to-person contact over 20 years is one of the best ways to avoid conflict. In effect, we are being given only half of what we are assured will be ours in the current issues of our catalogue, our student handbook, and the other university publications which inform us about and encourage us to become involved in our athletic programs. It would seem that the administrators fortunate enough to be a part of this decision could reconsider the basis for our sporting events here at Western: to "aid in the development of pride and identification for both the student body and the region." Student Government needs the support of the students in this matter especially; personal letters are most effective and there is no reason why any student should hesitate to contact our chancellor. Dr. H.F. Robinson. The voice of the students should continue to be heard. Broome to Speak Michael Broome, an inspirational and humorous speaker who has gained national recognition and prominance as an orator, will be at Western Carolina this coming Sunday, February 1. Broome, a graduate of Appalachian State University and twice President of the ASU student body, is a motivator. He designed his own major at Appalachian in personal development. Broome is trained in a variety of skills ranging from pantomime to comedy. He is currently president of the Tomorrow's American Foundation and speaks to audiences everywhere. Last year more than 200.000 people listened to Broome's rhetoric of freedom, self-reliance, and the individual's ability to make impossible dreams come true. These may be good, old-fashioned themes, but the method of delivery is new. Instead of dry recital, Broome provides a heady mixture of acrobatics, mime, wit and pathos.
