  • May 29, 2009 WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 2 NEWS Swine Flu Scare Hits Close to Home By Catherine Butterfield Staff Writer The latest pandemic, or a sickness that spreads through a population across large area and can even spread: worldwide, is none other than swine flu, or the HIN] virus. Believed to have originated in Mexico, the swine flu as. infected over 5,000 people and has been discovered as close to Cullowhee as Rutherford County. -.The Center for Disease Control says 5,123 cases, including five deaths, have occurred in the United States as a result of the HIN] virus. Commonly known as swine flu, HIN1 was once only found in pigs. Typically during the winter months, the swine industry is affected by the swine flu. The most common cases of swine flu in humans, until recently, was from pig to pig farmer. There. is a vaccine for pigs... Across the world, over 9,000: people have been infected with the virus, with most cases being in Mexico and the United States. _HINI spreads from __ infected person from uninfected person through cough or sneeze and few humans are immune to it. Sarah Brown, a WCU employee, says Im not that worried about getting swine flu, however I am taking precautions and washing my hands more _ frequently. (Budget Cuts - continued from page no favor. Several students opposed the decision to dismiss Savage by organizing a facebook group which overtime accumulated almost 400 members. Through the facebook page, people were given instructions to write letters to appropriate people - on Savages behalf. The positivity shown in the letters was possible the strongest factor that may have raised the eyebrows of the administration. IT am pleased to say that the Provost has verbally recognized the contributions of the students as being a major factor in his decision to adjust funds to keep my position, said Savage. I will be returning in the fall but still on a one year contract. I hope that the economy will improve in the ext year and we wont have to go through this again. Not only have staff positions been affected at WCU, but also the availability of materials throughout the university has shrunk considerably. | Westerns Department of Music has recently had to forfeit the use of excess paper, due to the sudden expense charge of 4 cents per page. According to Bardo, officials at WCU are trying to find ways to reduce costs that will have a minimum impact on faculty, staff, and services. Bardo stated We have targeted __ budget cuts for less damage, trying to maintain the quality of the student experience as much as possible. Travel has also become an issue with the university. According to 50% of all flu cases that have been reported recently are H1N1. The CDC is tracking the virus through seasonal _ surveillance systems. They have reported an increase in the number of flu cases for this time of year, whereas in * North Carolina, only 12 cases have been reported thus far. Cases in surrounding states are higher. With Tennessees reported 82, Georgias reported 24, and South Carolinas reported 36 cases, citizens should look out for symptoms such as: headaches, fever, fatigue, chills, cough, nausea and diarrhea. The Jast': flu. scare was the avian flu in 2006. The CDC is working to educate health officials, providers and the public on .what HIN1. is..and how to prevent it. Prevention includes frequent hand washing and those experiencing symptoms are encouraged to seek treatment from a _ medical _ professional and limit contact with others to _prevent the spread of the virus. Treatment includes antiviral and prescription medication, which can be received from your physician. Roland Hever ustration Courtesy of Metro Grap Bardo and the budget reduction plan, we must eliminate all travel that is rot required to further the institutional mission. As a result of this plan, funding was not provided to Cheerleaders, the Dance Team, or the Pep Band, for example, to attend the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament. Also, the Summer Commencement that takes place in August was suspended, which saved the university between $15,000 and $20,000. No one took any joy in the process we have gone through, said Bardo in reference to the budget cuts. We certainly understand that these steps will affect a number of our students and their families. It is simply a sign of our turbulent economic times. In the Department of Administrations and Finance, several reductions have been made as a means to reduce costs. 17 positions have been abolished, while the student and non-student. wages have been substantially reduced. Supplies in this division will be reduced by $312,961 and utilities will be decreased by $365,143. The outcome of all this should be that we try to minimize the pain of the campus, Bardo said. We: try to maintain quality and enhance quality wherever possible. We try to become more effective. We try to become more efficient. We try to become more strategic as we implement for the future. Coca-Cola No Longer WCUs By Adam Crisp WC Intern A change is coming to Western Carolina University. Pepsi, a company, of PepsiCo, is one. of the, ) worlds largest food and beverage companies, and now it will find a home here on campus. The makers of Pepsi, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Mountain Dew, PepsiCo has won the contract over Coca-Cola for distribution rights at WCU. Danya Cope, Assistant Food Service Director at Western Carolina said that they will start the transition slowly, moving out a few coolers at a time. The process should be finished by the end of July. With innovations such as the worlds first climate friendly vending machines, and healthy snacks, the PepsiCo has seen its stocks rise despite the negative economic trends that the United States is faced with. There are also positive reviews with the Pepsi-Cola and Mountain Dew. Throwback drinks which By Catherine Butterfield Staff Writer Economists recently reported that in order for North Carolina to balance the budget for next year, they must come up with an additional $1.5 billion. North Carolinians who expected the gas tax to decrease from 29.9 cents to 27.9 cents over the summer were recently disappointed by a 34- 12 North Carolina Senate vote. The vote keeps the tax at29.9 cents. It will remain at a 29.9 cent minimum not only for the summer, but until 2011. I think that in this changing and slumping economy that it is riveting that the one thing our state government is focusing on is the minimum that the gas tax will be able to be lowered to from now till 2011. There are more pressing and important issues that the State government needs to deal with, like school and university funding, states Jonathan Hubler, WCU graduate of 2008 and currently resides in Jackson County. Typically, the gas tax is adjusted every six months according to the wholesale base gas price. The decision to keep the gas tax at 29.96. cents could generate nearly $70 million in revenue for the state. feature designs from the 1970s and 1980s as well as using real cane sugar instead of corn syrup. These drinks hope to help taste opinions such as the, ones that Carter Grice, 4 and graduating senior at Western Carolina University gathered. In a well designed experiment for Psychology 272, we found no significant difference between Coke and Pepsi across three variables: sweetness, aftertaste, and general liking, said Grice. However, a double blind study - at Lewis & Clark College revealed that people did in fact prefer the taste of Pepsi over the taste of Coke, While this shows that there is NO one answer on which one is best, depending on who you ask and where you go, the over-all attitude on campus is a positive one. Western Carolina student Tyler Glovier said, Pepsi is good. Its nice to have a change once in a while. Another student, Mike Hinkle said, Im. straight with Gas Tax Update sychology major Illustration Courtesy of Metro Graphics it. I like the taste of Pepsi better. Pepsi is also affiliated with Live Earth, an environmental organization, City Year, an organization, that, lets, young:people - volunteer in city, schools) and neighborhoods, and Do Something. org which lets young people pick from a variety of causes to help. - While some still like the taste of Coca-Cola, there seems to be more Pepsi lovers, for now, at Western Carolina and across the U.S. PepsiCo, for the first time in their history, recently made a slight gain on the Coca-Cola Company and why their stock has recently risen during the current economy. PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi said in a recent press release, Even in this difficult economy, we are committed to retum cash to our. shareholders while continuing to invest in the long-term growth of our business.
