  • JULY 19, 1980/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Page 7 Hi-calibre professional entertainment by Toni Saddler News Editor Last night marked the beginning of the sixth annual Cullowhee Music Festival, with a Chamber Music Recital. "The festival's aim," cites Thomas Tyra, artictic director of the festival and head of WCU's Music Department, "is to bring live professional performances of a high caliber to WCU and the neighboring community." Professional orchestra members, faculty, selected students, and community musicians comprise the list of performers. A total of nine performances will be given in Cullowhee, Cashiers, Swain County, and Franklin. Tonignt a Chamber Music Recital will be given at Swain County High School at 8 p.m. On June 20, a Festival Players "Pops" Concert will take place at the Fine Arts Center in Franklin at 8 p.m., on June 21 at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers at 6 p.m. June 24 on the UC lawn at noon. A Festival Players Ensemble is scheduled for 8 p.m. on June 22 in WCU's Recital Hall. The Festival Opera, Gianni Schicchi, will be given June 26 at the Fine Arts Center in Franklin, June 27 in WCU's Hoey Auditorium, and June 28 at the Community Center in Cashiers. All opera performances will be at 8 p.m. Performers for the Chamber Recital will include a string quartet and wood wind quintet. Among the works to be featured for the Festival Ensemble are the Serenade, Op. 44 by Dvorak; Octet for Strings by Mendelssohn; La Creation du Monde by Milhaud; and The Suite from the Three Penny Opera by Weill. A string quartet and woodwind quintet will perform. Gianni Schicchi, is a one-act comedy by Giacomo Puccini. Its plot centers around the greedy Donati family's plan to alter the will of an already-dead relative to their advantage. Principal roles include the title role played by Edgar vom Lehn; Lauretta by Jacquelyn riilpepper, and Rinuccio by Scott Berry. C. Temple . Call in the professionals Haywood Transfer and Storage Co.. An orchestra directed by Thomas Tyra will also contribute. Tickets for the on-campus concerts are $3 for adults and $1 for students. Summer school students are admitted free of charge. Tickets for Gianni Schicchi are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Students enrolled in summer school courses are admitted free to all on-campus performances. Ticket reservations for the WCU performances may be made through the Music Department at 227-7242. "There are few college campuses which sponsor a similar festival of such professional caliber. An outstanding group of musicians will be performing."
