  • JULY 19,1980/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/I r Mc9) _\ Con't. from page 1. Senior CAP members, cadets, and some visiting members attended. The CAP's role in the event was non-fund raising, although local clubs >vere invited to set up booths. Refreshments were sold by the Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department, the Kiwanis, and local girl scouts. In a brave but wet gesture, the Sylva Jaycees provided a dunking booth. The tours, lasting about 12 to 15 minutes, covered Dillsboro, Main Street Sylva, and Highway 107 towards Cullowhee. Said one rider, "I never knew that WCU looked like that from the air." In addition to some visiting pilots, three Jackson County pilots, Raymond Caldwell, Ernest C. Jones, and Mr. DiCillo provided most of the tours. One interesting rider, A Mr. Fletcher who will soon be celebrating his 93rd birthday, stated, "This is one of the first plane rides I've taken for pleasure. I've been in both World Wars, and it was really nice to just enjoy the mountain scenery. A committee consisting of Barbara Fancher, coordinator, and Phoebe Hall, laid the ground work for the event with about three months work. Mr. Frank Holden of the CAP also added valuable work. Tentative plans for another fly-in are being considered. "We've had an excellent turnout," so tar, said Mr. DiCillo. Included in the air entertainment were stunts by an AT-6 World War II Trainer from Texas. One stunt was a crowd-surprising false landing in which the plane skimmed the surface of the airport before suddenly seeping upward. One of the pilots, David Jones, flew 325 nautical miles to WCU from Franklin, Va. He has been flying for seven years and has put in over 340 hours of official flying time. A 1942 Waco UPF-7 Biplane was displayed by Steve McConnell of Franklin. This plane was worth around $300 during World War II. but well-restored, is now worth from $18-30,000. This 226 horsepower plane is capable of going approximately 100 knots. Its restoration was completed last Easter. a/nie
