  • Page 12 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April 10, 1980 Once assistant trades jobs . Williams trades jobs... a retrospective By Russ Randolph Staff Writer Well, it's official. Mark Williams is now the new president of the SGA. His campaign was one full of attention to the fact that he w as no stranger to the SGA scene. The following article is truly a good example of that, a story about his old job, a job that will surely serve as good experience to his new one—assistant to the "old" president, Roger McKinney. Whether you know it or not, the amount of time and effort if takes to run an efficient student government is quite a lot. There are meetings to go to, papers to file, phone calls to make, an office to run. and without an assistant, there would be only one person to do all that. But thanks to Mark Williams and Tim Sikes. the president and vice president do have sonic relief. Acting as assistant to President Roger McKinney, Mark Williams is no stranger to the Student Government scene. The junior political science and philosophy major from Robbinsvillc has worked with and around Roger as attorney general, and senate committee member, as well as other SGA functions and branches. An avid blue grass lover. Mark is a professional dogger and a tremendous banjo pit who will be playing with Mac Wiseman and Chubby Wise in the annual bluegrass concert here at Western soon. His future plans include going to lav. school, continuing playing in his bluegrass band, and hopefully one day be a corporate lawyer. As presidential assistant, Mark has his hands full. Just come by his office sometime and you may find him either typing, filing papers, talking on the phone, advising Roger with his opinion, or gone to a meeting while Roger attends another. He says although sometimes demanding, he really enjoys it "Politics and government have always been major interests of mine," admits Mark, and "Roger and I are great friends, and I enjoy working both with and for him." Besides being an assistant to Roger. Mark also acts somewhat like an advisor to the court system, since he was attorney general last year and is one of the few experienced court members of the SGA who is left. All former court members have graduated or no longer serve. He was responsible for practically all the organization of this year's court system, and even designed a new traffic appeal form for students to use that is much easier and less expensive than and the old one to use. Roger admits, Mark's service is invaluable. "Without the help of Mark in tin office, 1 don't think I would be able to function sometimes," he said. "And since Mark has been around this office so long, he ^_iii i tiiiii* i i iinii •■■• iiiitiiniii tut iiiiij »iiiii iiiiiiiiiiaKiiiinaiiii iiiiiiii lit iiiL^ | Students!! i Last Thursday you chose your leaders for SGA, who promised this & that Well, this Tuesday the 15th vote for someone who won't let them forget those promises! While their official titles are assistants, perhaps "vice" would be a better word to describe their duties. Even though there is a vice-president (Richard Sullins), the SGA office would still have trouble functioning if the jobs of assistants were not filled, and the President would still have too much to do. While Mark Williams assists Roger McKinney, Vice-President Richard Sullins also has an invaluable assistant to help with his various duties. Tim Sikes, a senior psychology major from Burlington, does basically the same thing that Mark does, although the functions of the vice-president's office do differ somewhat. That difference being that the vice-president has the task of heading up the senate, a job which is constantly loaded with many duties and responsibilities. Tim first took the job as assistant in the spring of 1979. He had previously been a senate member, and senator at large, so he too was no stranger to the SGA scene. Among some of Tim's duties and tasks include keeping the senate ledger at all senate hearings, keeping up with the original copies of resolutions, and keeping them on file, to keep up and organize statute books, to keep senate minutes, and to file them, and to serve and respond as senate parliamentarian. Tim. too, says although sometimes not-so-easy, it's a job he enjoys. "I too, have always had a major concern in politics and government," he said, "and 1 find this job to be right down my alley." Roger McKinney, perhaps said it best when he said this about the duties Mark and Tim carry out, "The more honest people we have in our offices (president and vice-president) to help run our office more efficiently and beneficially on the part of the students, the better off our entire SGA will be. <'////////////.'/, ■■/,:■ ■■//// /////■/////, y,//////// SME The Society of Manufacturing Engineers will sponsor la tour of Square-D in Asheville on April 14, 1980.
