  • April 3, 1960/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN /Page 13 WESTERN CAROLINIAN ECU downs WCU East Tennessee State University med just a little hitting, a few WCU mistakes and five-hit pitching from Buc righthander Jeff Andrews to defeat the Cats 6-2 in a Southern Conference baseball game played at Riverside Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee, Tuesday afternoon. The loss by the Cats dropped the tea->i to 3-1 in the league and 10-8 overall. ETSU improved to 10-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. WCU struck for two runs in the first on a double-play grounder by Willie Carpenter and a single by Jim Reinicker. But, Andrews, 5-0, then allowed the Cats just two more hits—a single by Carpenter in ihe third and double by Chet Greeson in the eighth, as Andrews struck out 8 and walked 6. In between the Cats' offenae, the Bucs, who managed only four hits off Randy Sims, 2-2. scored a run in the second, two in the third, one on a home run by Chip Deckard, and then added some insurance rims in the eighth, two of those on a two-out infield error by the Cats. The loss followed a good week of play by the Cats, who vaulted into first place in the league standings with a doubleheader sweep of Davidson. The Cats, behind the clutch hitting of first baseman Don Ingle and an 11-hit attack from the team, put the Wildcats down 8-5 in the first game. Lin Stadler, 1-2, picked up the win with David Ray Robinson earning the save. In the second game. Western struck for seven runs in the third inning to whip the Wildcats 10-2. Ken Hare went the distance to up his record to 1-2. Ingle added two rbi's and Kyle Radford added three hits to key Western's win, which gave them first place in the conference. SPORTS I Western's Billy Boyd takes first standing up in yesterday's action against Appalachain State. Despite a valiant effort, the Cats fell to ASU 9-4. In a nonconference game Monday the Cats, behind two home runs from freshmen Greg Johnson and a tie breaking two-run shot by Willie Carpenter in the eighth inning, downed Carson-Newman 11-9 at Ronnie G. Childress Field. Johnson and Carpenter both had 3 rbi's and helped the Cats come from behind three different times in the game. Robinson, 1-0, was the winner in relief for WCU. with Doug Mitchell earning a save. Thursday and Friday the Cats entertain non-conference foe UNC-Wilmington in 3 p.m. games at Childress Field. Campbell comes in for a Saturday, 1 p.m. doubleheader, with Furman coming in April 8 after the Easter holidays. Time for the Purple and White Game again The emergence of a quarterback, a solid defensive front and the outstanding athletes at the running back and receiver positions are expected to draw the majority of attention from the fans when Western Carolina University stages its annual Purple and White Spring Football Game this Thursday evening at E.J. Whitmire Stadium. The intra-squad game that climaxes the twenty off-season practices will begin at 7:30 p.m. Head coach Bob Waters will be in the stands to evaluate his talent and will turn over the coaching reins to his assistants and a pair of guest head coaches Larry Pope, sports director of The Asheville Citizen-Times, and David Steele, sports director for WLOS-TV (Asheville's Channel 13). will serve as the head coaches. Pope will coach the Purple team and will have the assistance of Chancellor H.F. Robinson and Catamount coaches Bob Setzer (defensive line coach), Don Millwood (offensive line), Mutt DeGraffenreid (graduate assistant), Ty Smith (graduate assistant) and Kent Briggs (student assistant). Steele will handle the White team and will be aided by Vice-Chancellor Bob Stoltz and WCU staff members Don Powers (defensive coordinator), Don Dalton (offensive backs), Bobby Pate (defensive backs). Randy Howard (student assistant) and Joel McCanna (student assistant). "Larry and David are excellent Sunday and Monday morning coaches," said Waters. "We are going to give them an opportunity to use their expertise and I am going to sit back and evaluate their strategy." he explained. The search for a replacement for record setting quarterback Mike Pusey has been the most pressing problem for Waters and his staff in the off-season Sessions. Pusey led the Catamounts to three consecutive winning seasons with his career totals of 6.160 passing yards and 43 scoring passes. In the process, he established seven Southern Conference records and 14 WCU passing and total offense record. Ronnie Mixon, a rising soohomore who took a total of 21 snaps from center last season, has emerged or survived, as the Catamounts top quarterback this spring. In fact, Mixon, a 6-0, 180 pounder out of Charleston, SC could be called upon to quarterback both teams in the spring game as four other hopeful signal callers have been sidelined by a variety of injuries. David Mashburn, an Enka High product and transfer from Middle Tennessee State, was considered Mixon's top competitor for the No. 1 spot before he had to undergo surgery for torn knee ligaments last week. Marty Douglas. ex-Murphy High star, was sidelined last Saturday with a broken rib. Earlier in the spring, rising sophomore Noal Templeton. a very promising passer, and senior Mitch Watson were sidelined with shoulder and ankle injuries, respectively. "Ronnie has to be considered the front runner to be our No. 1 quarterback going into pre-season practice in August." said Waters. "We are delighted with his progress. He has a lot to learn, but he has a good arm and an excellent head," he added. Mixon will quarterback the Purple team and will be joined by tailback Leonard Williams, runnerup for Southern Conference freshman of the year honors last fall; all-star wide receiver Gerald Harp, ranked third in pass receiving yardage last season in the nation; explosive wideout Dwayne Norman; and 6-5 tight end Eddie McGill on offense. The Purple defense will be led by all-conference and George Alston and veteran standouts Charlie Hughes (linebacker), John Strong (tackle) and Lee McCall (cornerback). Templeton is slated to quarterback the White team. He will be joined on offense by exciting tailback Anthony James, glue fingered receiver Jeff Dean, and returning starters on the offensive line. Vernon Greene, Mitch Vestal and Lonnie Braxton. All-conference linebacker Ricky Smith and standout tackle Larry McClain are the defensive leaders. Waters has voiced his pleasure over the Catamounts defense throughout the spring drills "Our defense has had an outstanding spring and if we can stay healthy, this is going to be a very good defense. We have a little less experience than last season, but this bunch excites me." noted Waters. Western's defensive strength is built around a solid front line of veterans consisting of down linemen McClain, Strong, Eddie Estes and Johnny Williams; Alston at end; and linebackers Smith and Hughes. The Catamounts secondary, which was the key in WCU leading the nation in pass defense last fall, returns five proven players who have been starters over the past three seasons—seniors Willie Wells. Lee McCall, Ted Dunn and Teddy Phillips and junior Stan Davis. Offensively, Western's strength lies in its receiver corp and young running backs. Harp headlines the corp of mini-receivers. The 5-9, 160 pounder has been a two-time all-conference selection and has produced over 2.000 pass receiving yards and scored 25 touchdowns. Dean made 31 catches last fall, many of them of the circus variety and Norman averaged almost 25 yards per reception. McGill, at 6-5, and sophomore Felix Smith, 6-2. 225, are a pair of imposing targets at tight end. Williams and James combined for 1.256 yards on the ground and scored 18 touchdowns as rookie tailbacks last season.
