Page 8 /.THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/January 24. 1980 Here's the record What does the SGA really do? The Student Government Association (SGA) is alive and well here at WCU. At least that is what Roger McKinney and Richard Sullins are trying to get across to the students. SGA has accomplished numerous goals over the past semester of work. For a moment though, let's look at the track record of SGA from May until Christmas break. After being elected President of SGA, Roger McKinney got on with the business of seeing that the 79-80 school year would run as smoothly as possible. Plans were made to m;et with various refrigerator leasing companies in the summer as the present contract had expired. McKinney chose to stay with the company the school had previously done business with but made some important changes in the contract. First, he had .ne firm replace the 500 refrigerators with new ones as over 100 of the previous refrigerators were broken and just sitting in storage collecting dust. The number of the refrigerators leased from Chicago based company was reduced from 500 to around 300. Last year there were just too many refrigerators that were not leased that SGA was having to pay for even though they were not being used. Another plus in the new refrigerator contract was that President McKinney was able to arrange for the students to buy the refrigerators they leased relatively cheap at the end of the year. A second major accomplishment was achieved when the UCB and the SGP merged sucessfully into what is now called Last Minute Productions. This organization is responsible for bringing concerts such as The Little MMW,W.W.W.J.^^^^^^^ University Laundry agent for Highlands Cleaners Newly Remodelled & Expanded »»»»« '"////•*//'/;/'//;///'///////;/////////,//////////„//////,///„„//„„,//,„, Film Processing 12 Exp. $2.99 20 Exp. $4.49 24 Exp. $5.09 36 Exp. $7.19 Reprints 22' Prices Good thru Jan. 31, 1980 Everyday Special Cigarettes 45' including tax ^///y/////y//yy////////yyyy//////////yy//y/yyy////yy////y/// /////,////////////// •■•■ ■/////////'■//////'■ Large Variety of Snacks and Munchies Available While Doing Laundry Hours 7am-11pm Att. on Duty 9am-11pm "More Than A Laundry" River Band to WCU. Last year there were rumors of money mismanagement in both the UCB and SGP. Though nothing was ever proven, it was decided that in the best interest of the school the two should merge. By merging Student Government has more input into the organization and can oversee the financial handlings. _ The merger was sponsored in the Senate bv Richard Sullins Vice-President of SGA and passed on September 17, 1979. It should be noted that Mr. Sullins. as a part of his office.presides over the Senate. Also in talking with him he stated that "the main goal of my office is to streamline the Senate in order for it to run more smoothly and effectively." Another bill of importance was Bill #810, which was sponsored by Senator Hollingsworth and Senator Blalock. The bill dealt with tightening the attendance policy of the Senate. In past years, if a Senator came into the meeting when the Senate was already into new business, then the Senator would only receive a tardy. Unfortunately much of the Senate's business deals with old business and in many cases there would not be enough Senators for a quorum. As of now two unexcused absences per academic year constitutes grounds for expulsion. Also Senate members cannot leave at their own discretion. Unless excused, they must remain until the meeting is adjourned. On October 15, 1979, the committee on finance submitted bill #814 which was an act to appropriate funds for SGA approved clubs and organizations for the 1979-80 academic year. Though there was some disputes between organizations and the Senate on how muqh they should receive, the bill passed by a 24-1 margin. There will, however, be a possible $5000-6000 available this semester to clubs and organizations for special projects. While little credit or recognition is given to SGA, thc,y are here to work for the students. They have made the student court system stronger and more effective in the past semester. They have worked hard to see that everything is handled above board. Since the merger of the UCB and SGP the amount of proceeds from concerts has increased. The SGA has passed a bill stating that all stipend positions, salaries, and raises are subject to Senate approval. The Senate also created a committee to review the enormous back log of traffic court cases. The committee was chaired by Mark Williams and it determined the innocence or guilt in each of the 500 cases that came before the committee. Finally, in a bill sponsored by Vice-President Sullins and Senator Frank Kcllcy, the student senate urged the WCU administration to continue and redouble its efforts to aid the handicapped students on campus by eliminating all architectual and program barriers on campus. In the next few weeks the Western Carolinian will be running profiles on all of the officers in SGA. This is designed to let you know what their hours are and where you can go for help on various matters. If you are having a problem and wish to go by the SGA offices, they are located on the second floor of the University Center. The Closet E.
