  • Page 6 'THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Januaiy 24. 1980 NC jewelry display in Belk gallery An invitational exhibit of recent works by outstanding North Carolina jewelry and metal artists opened WCU's 1980 exhibition schedule Jan. 9 in the Belk Gallery. The exhibit, entitled "North Carolina Jewelry and Metals '80," will feature the works of 20 state artists and will be on display in. the Belk Building gallery through Jan. 30. There was an opening reception for the exhibit on Sunday, Jan 13, in the Belk Gallery. Both the exhibit and reception were open to the public without charge. According to the exhibit catalogue, interest in jewelry in the mountain region has its base in the readily available stones found in the region with metals often LMP ski clinics Last Minute Productions will sponsor Cross Country Ski Clinics and Trips every Sunday beginning January 27 through February 24th. A relatively easy to learn sport, the Clinics will offer basic instructions in Cross Country Skiing techniques. Cross Country Skiing offers an opportunity to explore the snow covered trails of the Great Smoky Mts. and provide the participant with some of the most beautiful winter scenery possible. Anyone interested must sign up by the preceding Friday by noon at the 1st floor office of the U.C. The cost is $8 which includes transportation, instruction and equipment. Participants should bring lunch, wear layers of clothing including gloves, hat or toboggan and a wool sweater. The group will leave the U.C. parking lot on each Sunday at 10 a.m. and return around 6:30 p.m. For more information come by Last Minute Productions office on the first floor U.C. or call 227-7479. Of the artists in the exhibit, some use new metals such as brass of tin alloy, others use iron, and still others use traditional silver, gold or pewter in innovative structures and techniques. Jewelry included in the show includes jewelry items in any process or materials. Metal works include formed, tooled, fabricated or cast items not in the category of sculpture. Among the many works included in the exhibit are rings, earrings, bracelets, an ocarina, a whistle, a pewter music box, necklaces, pin forms, cake knives and spoons. Artists whose works are included in the show are: Tim Britton. Kinston: Dpmpsy Calhoun, Greenville; Paige H. Davis, Bakersville; Kathleen Doyle, Penland- JaneFerree, Raleigh; Janet Fischer, Greenville; Shirley Gobble, Winston-Salem; Arch Gregory, Clyde; Janet Harriman, Durham; Jan Brooks Loyd, Newell; Betsy Mardowske, Greenville; Ted Matus, Cullowhee; Lynn Hope McNees, Earl; Mary Mintich, Belmont Carol Mitchell, Durham; Goodwill A.Post, Waynesville John Satterfield, Greenville; Susan Squires Stewary, Winston-Salem; Mark Stanitz, Little Switzerland; and Iris White, Snow Camp.
