The Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at WCU will sponsor its annual spring Red Cross Blood Drive at the UC on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22 and 23, from Noon till 5 p.m. The goal for this is 150 units per day. A.P.O. believes that giving blood is an act of personal commitment to your community. According to Mary Ritter, repersentative of the Asheville Regional Red Cross Blood Center, the growing patient needs throughout our 28 county region have pushed the Blood Center's goal to over 160 units per day. "The blood collected at WCU will be instrumental in supplying 39 hospitals in our area with safe, voluntarily collected blood," stated Ms. Ritter. Alpha Phi Omega and your Jackson County Red Cross Chapter encourage all eligible students and faculty to share your personal miracle by donating blood. WCU Chorus The Western Carolina Community Chorus will hold an organizational meeting and its initial rehearsal for 1980 on January 27 at 4 p.m. in Room 363 of the Music-English Building on the campus of WCU. The chorus, which was founded in 1970, draws its membership from the state's westernmost counties and performs throughout the region. The group has joined with the Asheville Symphony for concerts on several occasions. It is sponsored by WCU and the Jackson County Arts Council and directed by Dr. James E. Dooley. Audition is not required for membership and rehearsals are held on Sundays from 4 until 5:30 p.m. All interested singers are invited to attend. Further details may be obtained by calling 227-7337. Sing the blues RA POSITIONS OPEN 1980-81 ACADEMIC YEAR ATTEND ONE INFORMATION SESSION JANUARY 17 8-10 PM JANUARY 18 4-6 PM FORSYTH AUDITORIUM It began in the cotton country of the Mississippi delta and spread up river into Memphis. More specifically. it found a home, a place to flourish, and a place to grow on Beale Street. It was called the blues. Today the blues has been transformed from its beginnings. It has evolved into rhythm and blues, into soul, and more recently into blues-rock. But it began as a purer, simpler, rougher and more passionate kind of music. The kind played by the legends of Beale Street blues like W.C. Handy, Leadbelly, Blind Lemmon Jefferson, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson and others. Of course, those are the artists of the past. Now, few are left that play the iMemphis Blues with the conviction, skill and feel of the early days. There are, however, still a few, like the Memphis Blues Caravan that will be performing at W.C.U.'s Hoey Auditorium, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. As the source of much of today's contemporary music, the blues played by the Memphis Blues Caravan is somewhat of a living, performing documentary of the early style of blues. The names of the performers even conjure up the traditional image--Memphis Piano Red, who's been pounding the keys for sixty of his 72 years; Ma Painey, with forty-five years of the Beale Street blues behind her; Sam " The Mississippi Sheik" Chatmon, still grinning at 79; and Furry Lewis, the patriarch of the Memphis Blues and a medicine and minstrel show veteran. The music is largely acoustic (unamplified) and its practitioners rely not only on their music to entertain and communicate their art, but on their many years as showmen. The Memphis Blues Caravan performance is sponsored by WCU's Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Committee and is free to WCU students and subscription series members of the LCE, out advance reservations are required. Admission for others is $4 for adults and $2 for students. OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 497-9178 "MOON LIGHT TRIPS'' SAT.
