  • Course probes Japanese culture "What Japan needs, to serve its own ends and those of the rest of the world, is a concerted extensive public relations campaign to tell the rest of us what Japan is really like. But the idea of a PR campaign is completely repugnant to most Japanese; they find it hard to accept scrutiny of the way they live and they are sensitive to prying eyes." Dm-wood McAlister Atlanta Constitution November 25,1979 WCU students, faculty and local residents will have a unique opportunity to "probe" some of the important characteristics of the Japanese culture and realm in a 1-credit hour course during Spring Semester 1980. The PR campaign advocated by McAlister actually exists to a large degree in the form of over 2 dozen high-quality videotape programs which have been shown all over North America recently. The tapes have been produced to be offered as a course, accompanied by course outlines, viewing notes, test question, and supplementary reading materials. America is Japan's major trading partner and Pacific Rim Ally and the two nations have become intimately intertwined in economic, political, and international interests. The objective of this videotape course is to increase our understanding of the Japanese and their realm, without over-emphasizing any one particular perspective of any academic discipline. The course is interdisciplinary in concept and organization, and will be directed by Dr. Jeff Neff, Assistant Professor of Geography. Please register for the course during January registration. It is listed as USI 395, International Studies: Japan (1 credit hour). Meeting time and place: 6-7 p.m., every Tuesday evening, Stillwell 211. All course materials will be provided free of charge; no purchases necessary.
