  • December 6, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Page 7 Need help? Legal/Academic assistance available at SGA Students who are having legal or academic problems can receive help from Student Government Association. Among the services provided by SGA are the Office of Legal Assistance and the Office of Academic Assistance. The Office of Legal Assistance, according to Director Bill Rothermel, is a "place for students to go with legal problems". Operating on a 24-hour call basis, the office serves as an information center, and can provide students with a list of their rights on a federal, state. and local level. Although Rothermel cannot administer legal advice, he serves as a link between students and the court. He is equipped with a list of local attorneys who are concerned with student rights, and he can usually see that their services are provided to students at a reduced cost. Questions concerning legality can often be answered in his office without going to counsel, and all discussions between director and students are kept confidential. Some of these are raising money for bond, notifying family or other parties with student's expressed need, and dealing with traffic violations, relationships with landlords, or due process. Director Rothermel can also provide students with information on many subjects such as student rights on campus, alcohol, voter registration, and copyright laws. Students having academic problems can also receive assistance from the SGA Office of Academic Assist ance. One of the services provided by this office is the establishment of a tutorial schedule. Tutors are available in all departments and their services can be attained by talking with the department head. SGA Director of Academic Assistance Steve Nye can assist Students in getting tutors in the necessary courses. Another of Director Nye's services is making the student aware of his rights in the classroom. He can also provide the student with information concerning grading policies, computation of QPR, and the Academic Grievance Process. The main advice that Nye has for students is to read the Student Handbook. These are available at no charge in the SGA office, and they provide valuable information about academic policies and processes, as well as other aspects of university life. The handbook also contains the Student Bill of Rights, with which every student should be familiar. Many academic problems could probably be prevented, tccordlng to Nye, if students would simply read the handbook. Any questions or academic or legal problems should lie brought to Directors Nye or Rothermel, at the SGA office, located on the second floor of the University Center. Office hours for the Office ot Legal Assistance are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.. and Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Office hours for the Office of Academic Assistance arc: Monday from 1:15 to 4:15.
