  • December 6. 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 19 Women's gymnastics lose by 12 points Cafs fall in close one The women's gymnastics team opened their 1979-80 season with a narrow defeat at Longwood College (Va) 123.2 to 101.9 in AIAW action. The Lady Cats were led by a third place performance in the vaulting event by junior Debbie Bryant, and third place finish by Sophomore Beth Myers in the bar exercises to make the match close. The Lady Cats, coached by Susan Fields, will be trying to replace two of the best talents in the school's history with the graduation of Julie Gallagher and Martha Benedict. So far, despite the loss in the first meet, Coach Fields is happy with the teams effort. "We had a good meet at Longwood even though we lost. All our returning talent actually improved their score from last season in the first meet. We will miss Julie and Martha, but we have some fine talent that just needs to be developed and so far they are working hard to do that," says Coach Fields who led the Lady Cats to a number of state titles. Returning for Western are Sophomores Lautie Budd (Asheville, NC), Beth Myers (Greenwood, SC), Marcy Eggnatz (Miami, FL), junior Debbie Bryant of Madison, NC, and Jill Kaufman, a senior from Armand NY. Newcomers, who figure to play a vital role for the Lady Cats in this rebuilding sesason, are freshmen Louise Keller (Spartanburg, SC), Lynn Howard of Canton and Rebecca Bruce of Cullowhee; sophomores Theresa Hosack (Hendersonville) and Kat Marshall (Lake Lure, NC). Coach Fields sees a great amount of promise for the team with the good combination of experience and youth. "I'm really encouraged about our new talent. They are working hard to be competitive this season. Theresa and Louise, along with Lynn Kat and Rebecca all work hard and have a promising future here," coach Field declares, adding, "and I'm counting on our experience to provide us with some leadership and consistency." "Debbie Bryant and Jill Kaufman should be our strongest vaulters, with Beth Myers and Debbie leading us on the Dtlaace beam, which should be one ol our Stronger even—. We need to work on our bar exercises the most, with Beth Myers and M Eggnatz. being our top performers there, and our floor ises. with Beth leading us with help from Laurie Budd and Debbie so we should do Rood, she - One thing that DM) mike the season more difficult for the Cats will he some rule changes that will al scoring, greatly increasing the difficulty level, particu- larlv in the vmilrlno evercisea.
