Surles on sports by Steve Surles Saturday's game with UT-Chattanooga was certainly one of the most exciting intercollegiate football games I've ever seen. The Cats made as fine a comeback as you'll ever see, coming from a 22 point deficit to send the game to the last play...It was a shame that there was a sparse student crowd for the contest. One has to wonder, what does it take to draw a crowd to a football game? It was a great day, a super match-up of teams, and a very important game standings wise and yet there were only 7,109 in the stands...the students complain of nothing to do...if you like football at all, Saturday's game was one of those you wouldn't have wanted to miss... Another good thing that came out of the game, a disappointing loss, was the fact that the Catamounts, players, coaches and fans conducted themselves with a lot of class...unfortunately the same was not true for UTC...one of the Mocs verbally abused Coach Waters twice during the game and one time after the contest. The Cats may not win every game, but the Catamount coaches stress winning or losing with class which is even more important. That young player for the Mocs has nothing but a "W" in the win column...nothing else... The Southern Conference basketball rouser will be held Sunday and Monday in Roanoke, VA. It should be interesting to see how the sportswrlters and coaches pick the preseason conference finishes... THE SPORTING NEWS has a little blurb on Bubba Wilson this week...seems as though the classy 1979 WCU graduate put the skids on some high scoring by some of the NBA's best players. Bubba shut down Kansas City's Otis Birdsong, and Denver's David Thompson and quieted a hot Paul Westphal of Pheonlx in a recent contest. One last gasp From Page 14 Pusey went to the 6'5" 215 sophomore McGill, who had 60 yards receiving for the day. The pass was catchable at the goal line but a perfectly timed hit be Moc defensive back Mike Hunt jammed the ball loose. Then, McCloud intercepted the next pass as time ran out. for the Cats. The Cats gave UTC 455 total yards on the (425 of .that on the ground) but still took the game to the last second. After a slow first half, Pusey came back to Be sure and go to the scrimmages the basketball Catamounts will have, Thursday night, 7:30 In Franklin and November 20 at Swain High. The Lady Cats are having one in Reid Gym November 27 at 7:00 p.m. and one on the road in Clemson November 16. Be sure and get a preseason glimpse of WCU basketball. Tailback Leonard Williams' 12 TD's and one 2-point conversion makes him the highest scoring freshman in WCU football history...he needs 178 rushing yards to surpass Darrell Lipford's all-time freshman rushing total of 983 yards set in 1974...Mike Pusey broke two more conference records Saturday. He now leads In total offensive plays |931|, and pass completion|390|... Talk about great players... The Citadel—UTC game, possibly for the Southern Conference championship, will be teieviscd on ABC-TV local affiliates. Kickoff time is 4:07 p.m. In Chattanooga. Appalachian State won the conference soccer title again...The foot Apps went 7-0 in league play and gave up onlv 1 goal. The Cats finished fourth at 3-4. There is a super ankle in the October PROFESSIONAL SPORTS JOURNAL by Leonard Kippett on the NBA...it's a must for pro basketball fans or severe critics of the game. Speaking of the NBA...how about the 63-55 Furman-Davidson football game Saturday...they needed a shot clock. Seven touchdowns were scored in that game in the second quarter. I wish someone would explain to me how Baseball can have Willie Mays to sever his connection with the game as long as he's employed In a business with some gambling connections, while CBS-TV can employ the world's most famous oddsmakcr, Jimmy the Greek, on their Sunday football show...what's the difference, I wish someone would enlighten me...
