  • Page4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/November 1, 1979 Ramsey , Wykle honored at Homecoming Two men who grew up in Western North Carolina to achieve eminence in the political and scientific worlds received WCU's top service awards Satruday during the university's homecoming celebration. Slate Rep. Liston B. Ramsey of Marshall, one of the state's foremost political figures, received the 1979 Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Robert L. Wykle of Oak Ridge, Tenn., who grew up mi a Macon County farm and formerly taught school in Waynesville, received the 1979 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Ramsey was hailed for "his service to the people of Western North Carolina, the people of the entire state, and to Western Carolina University in particular" by Dr. H.F. Robinson, WCU chancellor. Wykle was cited for scientific research that "should hasten the day when scientists are able to bring the scourge of cancer under control" in a presentation made by Dr. John Bell, associate dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The awards were announced at the halftime of the WCU-Lenoir-Rhyne football game and formally presented at the annual Alumni Association banquet Saturday night. Recognition of the two service award recipients at halftime was coupled with the crowning of Miss Leslie Ann Britton of Central Islip, N.Y., as homecoming queen. A junior majoring in interior design, she is a basketball cheerleader. Ramsey, one of the state's best-known political figures, was singled out for the WCU award by a special selection committee of the alumni association. In presenting the award Saturday night, Dr. Robinson gave Ramsey credit for legislative leadership that led to construction of the Administration Building/Mountain Heritage Center and the funding of a proposed major library addition. Robinson said that Ramsey, as a member of the powerful Advisory Budget Commission, had "time and time again" taken action to advance the interests of the university. In reciting a long list of Ramsey's accomplishments, Robinson said the legislator has "represented the interests of his constituents in the way that counts most—he gets things done." Referring to the fact that Ramsey is expected to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1981, Robinson said that expectation "is universally hailed as having the prospect of elevating to that office one of the most capable legislative leaders in the history of North Carolina.'' Ramsey was first elected to the General Assembly in 1960 and has served in every session since, except the session of 1965. He formerly was chairman of the House Finance Committee, and Robinson said that in that capacity Ramsey "gave brilliant leadership to the shaping of the state's revenue policies." Ramsey now is chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee and last year was given two of the top awards in the state: the Roy A. Taylor Award given by the State Young Democratic Club and the citation by the Center x one 3CK= 3MC IK THE NEW 1979 Catamount Yearbook Is here/ Also 1980 Catamount Subscriptions Both available while they last Next Monday Nov. 5 10-3 2nd floor UC BE THERE 3ttC 38C DOC ^ac :>uc for Public Policy Research as the most effective member of the House, after the Speaker. Wykle was graduated from WCU in 1963 with a degree in chemistry. While at Western, he was a laboratory teaching assistant and for two years following graduation taught physics, biology and general science at Waynesville High School. In 1965 he enrolled for four years of graduate study at the University of Tennessee medical units in Memphis, working under a collaborative program at Oak Ridge as he earned his Ph. D. degree in biochemistry. Since 1975 he has been a member of the faculty of the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Wykle became a research associate at Oak Ridge in 1970, the year he received the Ph. D. from Tennessee. Since then he has risen first to the rank of associate scientist and then to scientist at the institution. A member of the American Society of Biological Scientists, Wykle has engaged fulltime in research, focussed on the biochemistry of lipids and membranes, primarily ot tumors, but also of the brain and lung. Bel! said Wykle "has made a great contribution in the basic research of the biochemistry of cells. He is one of the few people to work out the pathways of changes in enzymes which are common to different kinds of cancer cells." Wykle has written extensively on his research activities. In other awards presented Saturday night, Clyde Pressley, formerly of Cullowhee and now superintendent of the Eden school system, was given the Presidential Award for service in 1978-79 as Alumni Association president. The award was given by Van Stayton of Thousand Oaks, Calif., association president. Ben Price of Waynesville received the annual "unsung hero" award. "We run educational expeditions into the Sierra lor young people. Our Peak 1 bags get a workout, but the quality holds up. They're warm and comfortable.
