  • November 1, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Page 5 Carolinian newsbriefs Alpha Phi Omega Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, whose WCU chapter now is one of the largest and strongest APO units in the western part of the state, is celebrating Saturday, November 3, as a day of service. Chancellor H.F. Robinson, Governor James B. Hunt Jr., and Wayne Hooper, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Jackson County, all have issued proclamations calling for a "celebration of service" on Saturday and encourage students and other citizens to become involved in public service. The WCU APO Chapter, of which Jarrett Thompson is president, was organized 13 years ago and has sponsored major service projects at the institution. One of its major activities for 13 years has been sponsoring the visits of the Asheville Area American National Red Cross bloodmobile to the Cullowhee campus. During the last visit of the bloodmobile, a total of 1,550 pints of blood was given. The chapter is planning its annual Womanless Pageant at 8 p.m. November 14 in Hoey Auditorium to raise funds for relief of underprivileged families in the county and to assist residents in the County Home. In proclaiming Saturday a day of service. Chancellor Robinson said such a day can "help rekindle the spirit of service to mankind through our community and nation." Governor Hunt, noting that there are 31 APO chapters in the state, proclaimed Saturday as "Service Day '79 in North Carolina." Reading clinic The Department of Elementary Education and Reading at WCU will operate a Reading Clinic on the ajllowhee campus, starting in January and extending rough the spring semester which ends in early May. The clinic will be for elementary school children who need to improve their reading ability. Children who participate must receive a reading diagnosis during November or early December. Parents in the western area of the state who would like their children enrolled in the clinic should contact the WCU Reading Center in Cullowhee as soon as possible to arrange for the diagnosis. The center's telephone number is (704) 227-7295. The clinic is open to any person for whom its services are recommended following the diagnosis. Although the usual client is an elementary, junior high or high school student who is experiencing difficulty in reading, students with better than average skills who wish to achieve a high degree of reading excellence also may profit from the service, as can college students and other adults. A reading diagnosis includes an interview, screening of sight and hearing, intelligence and listening test, and a variety of reading tests. Kappa Delta Phi The WCU Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society will hold a brief social for its incoming members on Thursday , November 1, 1979 in Killian 104 at 6:00 p.m. All active members are encouraged to attend. The formal initiation ceremony for new members will be held on November 5 at the Court Hill Inn in Sylva. A buffet dinner will precede the ceremony and will begin at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Jack Fertig, assistant basketball coach at WCU will be the guest speaker. Again this is open to all Kappa Delta Pi members. Schlesigner speaks Arthur Schlesinger Jr., prize-winning author and historian and former special assistant to President John F. Kennedy, will speak at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 in Hoey Auditorium at WCU. Trained as a historian at Harvard University, Schlesinger established a national reputation and won his first Pulitzer Prize with the publication of "The Age of Jackson'' in 1945. At 29, he was one of the youngest persons ever to receive the award. Schlesinger was a founder of Americans for Democratic Action in 1947, and served as advisor and speechwriter for Adlai Stevenson in his presidential campaigns. in the 1956 campaign he met Bobby Kennedy and began an association with the Kennedy family that led to his appointment in 1961 as a special assistant to the president, a post he held until 1964. Out of this period CUM Schlesinger's memoir of the administration, "A Thousand Days," which won him his second Pulitzer and a National Book Award in 1966. His other books include "Robert Kennedy and His Times," "The Imperial Presidency," and a multi- volume series, "The Age of Roosevelt." Schlesinger now serves as Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities at the City University of New York. He formerly taught at Harvard. His speech is sponsored by the WCU Lectures, Concerts and Exibitions Committee. Admission will be free to WCU students and subscription series members of the LCE, but advance reservations are required. Admission for others will be $4 for adults and $2 for students. Senate report Monetary matters held the attention of WCU's Student Senate at its regular Monday afternoon meeting on October 29, 1979. 1 he law making body approved fifty dollars in appropriations to the WCU Criminal Justice Club. And the salary for the SGA clerk of court was raised by senate action to $175 per semester and $60 per summer term. The meeting also resulted in a bill requiring last Minute Productions to, "submit monthly expenditure reports to SGA and to the SGA Comptroller." The stipulation on Last Minute Productions is similar to that placed on all organizations receiving money from SGA. Michael Naylor was sworn in as a senator. Naylor replaces recently resigned Mark Asa. Finally, the senate heard for the first time several more bills, two of which are expressively in the interest of the handicapped student at WCU. Action on these bills is expected next week. Last Minute Productions PRESENTS 1 p Fall Auto Cross Sun.
