  • 3 Western Carolinian/February 23, 1984 On The Road Jeff Francis Staff Writer San Antonio is where you will find that famous fortress that set the stage for a dreary 13-day battle between Mexican and Texan soldiers. The Texans lost this battle but eventually won the 1836 war and Texas' independence from Mexico. The State ol Texas became a part of the United States in I845. Officially founded in I7I8 and incorporated as a city in I837, San Antonio ranks as one of the largest trade centers in the southwest. It is the tenth largest city in the United States today and growing even larger. Chief industry in San Antonio includes retail and wholesale activities of farm products, manufacturing, and military bases in the area are a major source of employment for civilians. The city covers I98 square miles in area and the metropolitan area spans over 2000 square miles Population estimates of the metro area have been set at approximately 900.000 persons. My experience touring San Antonio has only been once. Although quite a while back, the memories still linger. I was truly fascinated with the variety of Mexican and American architecture the city has to show. As far as historic cities of the United States. San Antonio ranks in the top ten and probably the top five. The main point of interest and historic site in San Antonio is undoubtedly, fhe Alamo. Located downtown, the Alamo was established in 17 IS and has served as a mission.church, and fortress. Defending the Alamo during the two week battle in 1836. were Daw Crockett and James Bowie. Many of their personal items and histories are shown here. The Alamo is open every day except December 24 and 25 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. and adrnission is "free. In addition to the Alamo building, there arc two museums which offer displays on early Texas history. There is no charge to visit the museums and they follow the same schedule as the Alamo building. The Remember the Alamo Theatre and Museum arc- located across from the historic fortress and offer a half- hour film presentation of the events which led to the fall of the Alamo. Admission is $2.50 for adults. Any visitor to the San Antonio area should make sure to spend at least one day visiting these four intersting places. The theatrc presentation is an excellent production. San Antonio Brackcnridge Lark is located in the northeast corner of the city. It features horseback riding, golf, and paddle- boats in a potpourri of outdoor recreation activities. A nice oriental sunken garden inside the park makes for a very scenic walk Ihe San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium, within Brackcnridge Lark, contain almost 2.500 specimens ol animals, reptiles, and birds Admission to the park and /oo is nominal. On the grounds of the I one Star Brewery rest the Buck horn Hall ol Horns museum. I his museum is quite unique as it features collections of animal horns, antlers, and several mounted specimens ol wildlife and fish. Last Friday night two Cullowhee youths were attacked and robbed by a band of unidentified squirrels. According to the boys the squirrels held them at gunpoint and demanded money or Wachovia cards. Letters .Towne & Country 'Florist High Praise For The Outing Club Orlando Russell Staff Writer When I went to interview the president of the Outing Club. I though that I would finish the interview unimpressed. Was I ever wrong. Sure. I have done some camping, some tubingand some mountain climbing. But. the Outing Club of Western Carolina University represents and does a great deal more. Ken Lauber. the new president of the Outing Club, spoke to me on what some of the activities were. They include slide shows of some of the beautiful areas throughout the world and films on sporting events where people challenge not only each other, but their own phvsical and mental limitations as well. These were among the more toned-down activities since this isa high adventure club. The outdoor winter activities include cross-skiing, or camping. However, the warmer weather allows this club to soar to greater hori/ons. Warmer weather permits the Outing Club to do activ ities like bicycling, picnicing.or any form ot outdoor recreation. Ken also told me that these outdoor activ ities could be combined in any way to make a large social event. He added that tubing and paddling, as well as canoeing are favorite pastimes of the Outing Club, since the I uekaseigce River is so convenient to the WCU campus. I wondered if Ken was just another club president with nothing but present-sighted goals in mind. I am GOODNITE PEACHES pleased to say that the goals he has tor the Outing Club are very good. One ol them is to help construct trails in sonic ol the National forests nearby. These new trails would be built to relieve the overcrowding problems and over use of the major trails in our National forests. Another goal that Ken discusses with me was the idea ot a clean-up day for the I uekaseigce River. He- discusses the problems ol garbage in the river floating around the Sylva and Dillsboro areas. Ken discussed at length ways the river could be taken care of in the Cullowhee area "Hopefully by then, people will care enough about the river to keep it clean." Ken added. A goal that Ken discussed with me that impressed me the most was the idea of having a campus-wide social event. I his social event would be expected to last all of one day and into the night as well. As I listened to Ken discussing this idea. I got very excited about what a success a River festival could be if done properly. The part that I liked the most was the idea of having the Greeks, the Non-Greeks, and ol course the Outing Club to all get together for this social event It could center around a canoe, raft and tubing race down the I uekaseigce. A picnic on the lawn complete with outdoor recreation to follow in the late afternoon. Afterward, this long day of fun in the sun could be followed by socializing at the local Cullowhee night spots. by Paul Falzon* '- I X I J) week's "Viewpoint." you presented several practical suggestions for solv ing some o I t h e CO m m unit y 's problems. Your proposals for hotlines, hallway houses, reading classed, et cetera, have a great deal of merit. Unfortunately, the hostile- way in which vou presented t h e s e ideas p r o b a b I y prevented any serious Sylva reader from reading past the sentence. "Come down out of your pulpit!" You accuse the Concerned Citi/cns of being too extreme, yet your cartoon includes the words. "Referendum: Ihou shah commit stupidity." We should be trying to make friends with our Sylva neighbors.
