  • Page 24/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/October 18, 1979 Sports JV football wins The Western Carolina University JV team used three touchdowns from running back Earl Kanipe and six fumbles by Carson-Newman to defeat the Eagle JV's 32-0 in Whitmire Stadium Thursday afternoon. Ahead only 7-0 at halftime, the Cats exploded for 25 second-half points, scoring 19 of those in the final quarter. Joining Kanipe in the touchdown parade were Steve Dellinger with two and one from fullback Don Holmes. Each second-half touchdown was set up by a CN fumble. The victory was the second of the year for the WCU JV's against no losses. Women split The women's volleyball team split two decisions this week when they played in two tri-matches. Wednesday night in Breese Gym the Lady Cats downed Gardner- Webb 15-2 and 15-11. In the second set of the evening East Tennessee State defeated Western 15-11 and 15-4. Tuesday night at Mars Hill the Lady Cats defeated Wake Forest 11-15, 15-13 and 15-13 in three exciting games. Then the team fell to Mars Hill 15-9, 4-15, and 13-15 to place their overall record to 10-9 and regular season mark to 9-6. Next week the Lady Cats take to the road for three matches. Monday they will be al Winthrop College, Tuesday night the Lady Cats will be at UNC-Charlotte and on Thursday, the final match of the road trip will be at East Tennessee State University. Practice begins Monday marked the first day of varsity basketball practice as the Catamounts staged an intrasquad scrimmage at 4:J0 in Reid Gym. Ihe purple team, coached bv Rick Miller edges Jack Fcrtig's Cold squad 92*80 in from of a good student turnout. Playing three 20 minute quarters, the Catamount exhibition was highlighted by 28 points from sophomore Greg Dennis, 23 from freshman Kenny Irimier, and several long range baskets from another freshman, Ronnie Carr. The Catamounts open the regular season November 30 in Reid Gym against Maryville College. Soccer mixed The soccer is in the midst of the busiest part of their schedule as they have three games scheduled for this week. Friday afternoon at Whitmire Stadium the Cats demolished UT-Chattanooga 18-1. The Mocs are in the first year of intercollegiate soccer and early this season lost to Appalachian State 22-0. The Cats used five goals from Simon Dickson, Scott Grumman and Neil Goodman to destroy Chattanooga. John Shireman added two goals and Phil Bonds another as the 18 goal assault made a new school record for WCU, breaking the old record of 14-0 against North Georgia in 1971. Added to all the scoring were 3 assists from Scott Grumman (8 total points) and two from Shireman and Jeff Foltz. Monday night the Cats lost a heartbreaker to Tusculum College 1-0 in Whitmire Stadium. The Pioneers scored on a goal from Tony Mendes 7:12 into the game and then held on in a hard fought exciting contest. The Cats were not able to score although they came very close, getting the ball within seven yards of the goal several times in the second half. The contest was also marred by innumerable tripping calls, dangerous plays, several yellow cards, and one red card as it ended in a bench-clearing brawl. Tuesday, the team travels to Due West, South Carolina to take on powerful Erskine College. The Cats lost a disappointing 7-0 decision to Erskine to fall to 6-6 on the season. Western will be at home Thursday night to take on UNC-Charlotte. The game will be at 7:00 p.m. in Whitmire Stadium. Outing Club The Outing Club will have slides at its next meeting Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Stillwell 211. The outing for this coming weekend will be an overnight backpacking trip to Joyce Kilmer.
