  • H.F. Robinson Who is that Mystery Man? October 11, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Page 5 By PHIL HARDEN Staff Writer That mystery man on the hill. Chancellor H. F. Robinson, deserves more than wc can give him my friends, but how about s round of applause. The name H.F. Robinson is synonomous with wit, determination,'success, presidents...the list could go on and on. He worked under President Johnson and now under Carter producing major world Statements and research on population and the world's food supply. He is smart, not just what you'd expect from a Chancellor, he's smart like a smack in the face, but he wouldn't think of it, he's not offensive, he's assertive and he's from these here hills in Western Carolina. IK- loves cm friends, and he loves Western Carolina University, its in his eyes and in his actions and he'd tell you if you asked him. Oh no, WCU didn't get the way it is now by itself. Our professors, Harvard Grads? Dartsmouth? WCU?creative, interesting, intellectual? Oh yes! Better students? This years' incoming students on the average scored 10 points higher on the SAT than last years' and yet the national scoring average is going down. More and more applications are being turned down. "On every count the standards of Western are increasing and you can quote me on that," says the Chancellor; so I did. But why? Why come to a university and submit yourself to all these terrifying general education requirements and these unnerving professors, who are constantly trying to rattle your brains? Well, to all you students who are having trouble in finding reason even being at a university, this one or any. Chancellor Robinson savs. "I think now we're seeing a swing toward getting an education for the whole person anil not one guided specifically toward a job. lhc education vou gel will enable you to make decisions for a better life." Our university has been reinitiated, by Chancellor Robinson, inwards standing "ready now and always to commit all it has to Ihe most effective service to the poeple to who it belongs." Whether vou want preparation for a career, just the education of your "whole person" or both, it can most certainly be found at Western Carolina University. 1 lie chancellor is guiding Western to recognition by making it ever more multi-faceted and service oriented. Being from Western North Carolina he wanted to open doors for "his people" and so H. F. Robinson came to Western in 1974 anxious to begin that move. He has since taken us far in that direction. Onward but downwards and stepping away for just a moment from glory, how about the daily problems Western's students face? What about the parking situation Dr. Robinson? "What about it? 1 can't give you a place right next to the building, " he says. " UK- rales are the lowest of any university this size in North Carolina and we have more parking spaces than there are cars, but like I said I can't give you a place right next to your building." Well folks, you might have to walk a stretch but you're better off than most and for all you Cullowhee nature lovers, just be thankful they're not building parking decks. Chancellor Robinson assures me "no plans for parking decks." However, he docs have other plans and manv of them have been or soon will be realized, ie., Mountain Heritage Center, four-lane highway, etc. Well how about those, Cullowheeans, are they justified? Oh yes, getting back to glory. In this age when other universities are gutted with cutbacks and layoffs, Western is growing, incredibly and with the graceful sensitivity of its Chancellor. If you've noticed, the four-laner does not run through our beloved campus creating chaos and ugliness, but tastefully strikes upon it exposing its beauty and relieving its congestion. Futhermorc. there is a direct correlation between four-laners and economic success. If we want Western to stand the lest of time this will be a significant factor. This is the way of the world in which we live and Western is facing it with preservation, esteem and no parking decks. He hasn't done it by himself, but H. F. Robinson has made Ihe difference. In closing the interview I asked Dr. Robinson what he thought of The Western Carolinian. "No comment." Well, maybe next time.
