  • Pace 4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/September 6, 1979 Carolinian newsbriefs Dr. Moss to lecture Dr. Steven T. Moss, from the Polytechnic, Portsmouth, England, will be on campus today and will deliver two lectures as part of this year's visiting scholar program. The first lecture is at noon in NS 108, and the topic is "The contribution of ultrastructural studies to an understanding of the development and taxonomy of labvrintrulid and Thrustochytrid fungi." This presentation will include the showing of an uncut 16 mm film on these unusual marine protists. The second lecture is intended for the general public and concerns "The biology of the Trichomycetes, a unique group of fungi which inhabits the guts of insects." It is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the NS Auditorium. Dr. Moss is a native of England and has visited the' U.S. a number of times. His research interests center on the development and structure of fungi. He is widely published in his field and is an editor of the British Mycological Society Transactions. ROTC: Senior Unit at WCU A demonstration jump by the support parachute team of the 82nd Airborne Division and a military review will be among the attractions Saturday (Sept. 8) as WCU plays host to Army Brig.Gen. F.Cecil Adams Jr. Adams, commanding general of the First ROTC Region, will visit Western Carolina to present a general order establishing a senior ROTC unit at WCU. The jump and review will be open to the public. The WCU department of military science has operated since 1976 as a detachment of the ROTC unit at Clemson University. Six paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg will make a precision jump into an intramural athletic field beside WCU's Belk Building precisely at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, officials said. The jump will be followed by a military review at 1:35 p.m. The WCU ROTC detachment and several junior ROTC units from western North Carolina will be on hand for the review. A military band and honor guard from the 101st Airborne Division'(Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Ky., will participate in the review. In announcing the plans for Saturday's ceremony, WCU Chancellor H.F.Robinson said advancement of the unit in four years to stand-alone status was one of WCU's major success stories. Got a bitch? For residents students, who have complaints or feel they have been unjustly treated in connection with resident halls, the Student Government Association of WCU offered an alternative to picketing-the Resident Hall Hearing Board. The board is a court consisting of six justices and one chief justice appointed by the SGA president. They have the powers of implementation, inforcement, and interpatation of the rules and regulations of the dormitories. SGA President Roger McKinney sees the board as a mediator between the wishes of the administration and the students, the primary objective being to give the students a fair trial. If the student feels that he has been treated unfairly he should take his case to the public defender's office on the second floor of the UC. The public defender will then advise the student to his best course of action, whether it be to pay the fine imposed or take it to the Hearing Board. If either the student or the Attorney General feel that the Hearing Board's decision was an unfair one, they may appeal it to the university Superior and Supreme Courts, who have the power to reverse the decision. More information about the Resident Hall Hearing Board can be obtained bv stopping bv the SGA offices on the second floor of the UC or by calling 227-7299.
