THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, JULY 28, 1977 Theater closes with 'Dear Love9 The WCU Summer Theater series comes to a close tonight with the»final production of "Dear Love" by Jerome Kilty. The University Players have offered entertainment for the last seven weeks which has held something for everyone. Shows were presented which ranged from intense drama, as in "Clarence Darrow" in which Ted Eiland took the lead role, to hilarious comedy, .as in "My Fat Friend" perfomed by Cathy Oaks, Armando Erba, Nick Searcy, and Felix Batton. Suspense and violence had its night with the production of "Veronica's Room", with Martha Huntley in the lead. supported by Alex Norris, Don Yopp, and Jeanne Murphy. A wide variety of acting talent was displayed, but as for the best performance, it's a toss-up between Sarah Gomes in "6 Rms Riv Vu" and Ted Eiland in "Clarence Darrow". Credit for the best set, lighting, and technical direction must be given to everybody who was in charge of such things, in "Clarence Darrow." Although the theater is naturally limited in what all can be presented onstage by certain logistics, rejoice, for slow motion instant replay has been introduced to the stage right here in Cullowhee. "The Sneeze," one scene of Neil Simon's "The Good Doctor" was done beautifully (and later redone again in slow motion) by Alex Norris, Meg Horton, Warren DuPree, and Lynn Brougan. THE CAEEK SEAT <■* *t* TtKA e. 7<Y <.ttn.i»ZKi *f„ Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded , at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868. The minds of the six founding members were still fresh with the memories and experiences of the Civil War and Reconstruction. From these six initial members, Pi Kappa Alpha has grown to its present size of 171-chapters located throughout the U.S. and Canada, and is ranked eighth among 100 other national fraternities. There are 13 chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha located in the Carolinas Region, which consists of North and South Carolina. -6- SUNSHINE MOUNTAIN llA-MillSt. 586-2211 PRE-OWNED MERCHANDISE FURNITURE, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS CLEAN PRE-OWNED CLOTHES. We sell anything on consignment Full locksmith service available Zeta Xi Chapter here at WCU was chartered on February 12, 1967, being accepted into the ranks of Pi Kappa Alpha after having been in existence for abou one year as a local colony, known as Sigma Phi Kappa. Our house is located three miles from campus on HWY 107 in the East LaPorte Community. We are presently engaged in various projects to raise money for a new house. Our chapter has approximately 40 members presently, from five southeastern states. Some of Pi Kappa Alpha's more noted alumni include Lance Alworth, former professional football player of the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys, U.S. Senators Strom Thurmond and Everett Dirksen, entertainer Fess Parker, who played such roles as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, and Col. Harlan Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The major social events that Zeta Xi Chapter participates in during the year are Homecoming, Founders Day Banquet, during winter quarter, Pikes Peak, (the annual competition between the five sororities at WCU), and-our annual Dreamgirl Weekend, which was held this year in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. One of our major service projects during the year is collecting for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. You may have noticed our fire truck on campus, which is the national symbol of our fraternity. The Brothers of Zeta Xi chapter invite all freshmen and undergraudate men to come out and see us at one of our weekly parties or anytime during the day. Our rush period for fall semester will be held from August 30—September 13, and a calendar of all rush activities will be available by calling 293-9969. Summer Theater offers an opportunity for all to get involved in the production of plays. Roles were shared not only by students, but by faculty members and even the housing staff alike. It has offered another aspect to the already enjoyable summer life here in Cullowhee. But the theater does not stop here. The University Players will begin operations again in fall semester, with "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, James Baldwin's "The Amen Corner," and "Rosencrantz and Guildcnstern Are Dead" by Tom Stoppard. All are to be in the Little Theater in Stillwell, which is being improved with the addition of cushioned seats which will be spaced further apart (thank God! The author is six foot five). Seating capacity will be reduced to about 150, but it'll be worth it. See you in the Fall. 'Love' a good show despite stage "Dear Love" by Jerome Kilty is being presented this week as the final production of the WCU Summer Theater series. The play is based on the letters written in the mid-nineteenth century between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett during their courtship, and is being performed tonight in Belk auditorium. The part of Robert Browning is done by Nick Searcy, and Diana Marshall plays Elizabeth Barrett. In spite of the lack of a stage in the Belk auditorium, the University Players have produced a good play which is full of expressionism in recounting the romance between the two writers. The entire play is almost devoid of anj action, but is filled with melodious dialogue which is very pleasing and easy to listen to. It is a unique drama dealing with love in a Victorian atmosphere and possesses a bit of light-hearted humor as well. This production demonstrates the University Players' ability to put together an enjoyable show even under less than ideal conditions. Tonight is the final performance, tickets are available at the door. LIKE INDIAN JEWELRY? Now's the Time to Come to TD's Closeout sale.
