A lone student sandwiched between two cardboard posters and carrying a picket sign, was marching in front of the administration building. His opinion of the housing department of WCU was clearly read by all who saw his signs: "Dear HEW, WCU Housing has gone broke! NEED Financial Aid! All Donations will be greatly appreciated," and on his hand sign, "Pack 'em in, Sack 'em In, Sis BAA, See 'em Choke, Watch 'em Croak, Ten to a Room." The picketer was Fddie Clark, a political science history major here at WCU. He was protesting "the whoie idea of how the university handles housing." Clark was surprised when he transferred to Western this fall to find that although the university had promised the student single or double occupancy rooms, many of the halls had three persons per room when classes started. Clark was among those with triple living accomodations. The director of housing, Randy Rice, said that Clark was one of the very next people to be moved into a double occupancy room and that he knew he would be moved before he started picketing. Clark let it be known that he was not protesting solely for his own benifit. While marching he said, "They think I'm out here for the purpose of getting a room, and that's it. that's not the issue." Be that as it may, Clark was moved into ano'tnef room by 5pm. In a telephone interview with the Western Carolinian, Rice stated that the housing problem was, "Typical for this time of year." He went on to say that there were six triple occupancy rooms as of Monday afternoon. By yesterday eight withdrawals from the school were forcasted with five dormitory spaces being vacated. Rice said, "If we don't have them out by the end of the week, I'll be upset," although he is expecting definite problems. These problems stem from having only 165 "no shows" when they overbooked the dorms to the tune of 184 spaces. Rice hopes that be next fall Western will have the facilities to adequately house all oif the students who wish to reside on campus. His plan lies in the renovation of the now vacant Robertson Dormitory, which once housed Lambda Chi Fraternity. The dorm is a shambels at present, yet plans are to have it totally reovated by next fall. The dorm will be open to students who are upperclassmen, married, or enrolled in graduate school. It will consist of eighty efficiency units, with kitchen facilities. The rooms will be admitedly very small, but hopefully the will meet the needs of their occupants. The building WCU's $3.4 million University Administration- Mountain Heritage Center, the cornerstone of a developing new entrance to campus, has been occupied and is now in the final stages of completion. More than 32 administrative offices began moving into the new building on Aug. 6 after the facility was accepted for occupancy by WCU and the State of North Carolina. By Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 15, Ken Wood, director of WCU's office of institutional studies and planning who coordinated the move, reported the moving process was virtually complete. Wood said moving crews, comprised of university personnel and a few students, had worked in three continuous shifts for more than 80 straight hours during the transition. While offices like the registrar's and accounting which were crucial to the opening of the fall term settled in, construction was still underway outside the building on the parking areas and landscaping. Quite a bit of work is underway in the Mountain Heritage Center area of the five-story, sixty-foot tall structure and telephone crews were busy smoothing out wrinkles in the more than 160 telephones installed.
