  • It's Been Real It's been quite a year for me, and certainly a depressing semester for the Carolinian staff. I want to take this opportunity to say a few things that I really feel need to be said. First, I want to congratulate and thank my staff this year. They've been simply one of the best groups of people I've ever had the pleasure to work with, and I'm truly sorry that we didn't get to work together more. I also want to congratulate Jim Buchanan, who will be taking over as Editor-in-Chief next year. Having worked with Jim for two years now, I feel confident that he will make a fine editor for the Carolinian. Jim's a hustler who will live up to his promise of more news. We've seen a change in the Carolinian this year from a politics-oriented, opinionated newspaper to one which brought to you news, announcements, and other activities about CULLOWHEE. With a news oriented publication and more input from students, I'm sure this newspaper will continue to grow, and with the new equipment and offices, it will be a pleasure to get back to it next year. This year also saw a standard set for the design of the Carolinian, thanks to the endeavors of Hughes Grogan, and I hope this standard will be long-lived. In closing, I want to thank the entire campus community for their support, for without you, we wouldn't be in business at all. Since this will be our last issue of the school year I want to wish everyone the best of luck on exams, have a party-filled summer, and do take care. THE WELL HQUSE SANDWICH EMPORIUM HOT DELI SANDWICHES Made with only the finest ingredients Riverwood Shops-Dillsboro 11 am-8pm MON-SAT 586-8588 Dear Fellow Students: On Monday, April 13, the Student Senate was presented a report from the Election Commission on the spring election for the offices of President and Vice-President. The Student Senate separated the report into one on the presidential race and one on the vice-presidential race. The presidential report was passed. The vice-presidential report was defeated by a 10 to 4 vote. The major reason for this defeat was that the obligations and duties required of them by the Student Government Association Constitution called for Senate approval of election results. The Election Commission had verified an ineligible candidate for vice-president and left his name on the ballot. By leaving this candidate's name on the ballot, this implied that the Election Commission found him to be a legitimate candidate for the office. This also implied to you, the students, that this candidate was eligible, and therefore a majority of voters cast their vote for an ineligible candidate. This candidate was not eligible and therefore should not have appeared on the ballot. Thus, a majority of the Student Senate felt that instead of sweeping our dirt under the rug, we would try our best to correct our own mistake and have you, the students, informed voters on the next vice-presidential election. We have positions open for typesetters, writers and proofreaders, and experience is preferred but by all means not necessary. We could sure use your help to put out an excellent publication.
