  • PAGE 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 26,1979 WCU faculty selected as Danforth Associates Mathewes Two WCU faculty members, Dr. Alice E. Mathews and Dr. Patricia A. Umfress, have been selected to serve six-year terms as Danforth Associates effective June 1. A graduate of the College of Idaho, Dr. Mathews holds master's and doctoral degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. She joined the WCU faculty in 1968 and now serves as associate professor of history. Dr. Umfress, an associate professor of French in the department of modern foreign languages, came to WCU in 1969. She holds the bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University and the master's and doctoral degree from the University of Georgia. The Danforth Associate Program is sponsored by the Danforth Foundation to encourage effective teaching and to humanize teaching and learning in the campus community.
